I was bored at work yesterday and my mind started to drift about English players past and present and Beckham sprung to mind. He doesnt really get mentioned anymore now for his footballing ability, but in his day he was arguably the nations most important player for club and country, but was he really that good a footballer or did his good looks, fashion style and the fact he was shagging a Spice girl make him into a bigger star than he actually was? Im undecided about this because i remember the game against Greece where he practically single handidly won us the match, he was awesome that game!. Other than having a magic right peg to open up defences he didnt really have that much else in his locker though did he?. I dont think i ever saw him beat one or 2 players with skill and pace or rarely did i see him volley one in the top corner. Whats everybody else's opinion on this?
He was a very good player, but he had his limitations. His vision and passing were excellent, and at dead balls, he was unparalleled. But he had little pace, mediocre dribbling technique, wasn't the kind of player to take players on and beat them. Very few players are what you would call, "The complete player", and Beckham was no exception.
Very true so if he had a face like a smacked ar$e and dressed like a kunt would he have been such a star?
Yes id have to agree. He must have been a strikers dream the way he could put it on a plate for them but its fair to say hes not made his millions through his footballing ability. That wonder goal from the half way line Kickstarted an amazing career for him but if it wasnt for that goal who knows where he would have ended up?
Well if you are asking whether he was overhyped because he looked like a Calvin Klein model and was dating a Spice Girl, then yes, for definite. Hardly his own fault, but yes, he was certainly overhyped.
Nobodys blaming him im just intrigued what peoples thoughts are of him as a footballer and not the hype that surrounded him. I personally thought he was exceptional but World class no. If it wasnt for the Beckham brand would the likes of Madrid, Milan and PSG really have been interested in signing him?
Madrid paid 25m for him and it was reported they recuperated that money back within 2 weeks through shirt sales from him.
Probably not, that was Madrid's "Galacticos" era when they were more interested in the popularity of their players and what PR they brought to the club, and how many shirts they could shift, but were less interested in what they could do on the pitch. Its the same reason they signed Michael Owen
Wand of a right foot. His personal life/ good looks boosted his reputation ten-fold though. Still an England great in my opinion, that free kick against Greece to take us to the World Cup will forever be remembered.
Remember United fans voting for their all time favourite player - George Best won it with Beckham second An interviewer put it to George that he must have been relieved to have been voted ahead of David Beckham George's tongue-in-cheek response (paraphrase) "Yes I am ... for a player that can't beat a man, tackle, head a ball or kick with his left foot - David is one hell of a footballer"
He's an England and United great. Ability wise, he was the worst of our four man midfield of Giggs, Scholes, Keane and him but he was still a cracking player. His fitness and workrate were phonomenal, that's what made him excel as a player. Hard work and dedication. Couldn't really dribble (but he could run with the ball) and definitely couldn't tackle but could pass, cross, shoot, head and was a tremendous dead ball taker. Good example too, proper leader. Yeah, he's a 'star' because of how he looks but he's still a top player. Not world class by any means though.
Basically a Danny drinkwater at Leicester when they won the prem, with a vardy up front and a kante in mf doing the hard work. Becks had Keane and willing runners in likes of Cole, yorke, rvn etc
Scored from the halfway line. Scored that free kick. Everyone remembers those moments, and that's what makes him special. He's etched memories into everyone's mind. He also had that sending off, he was hated, turned it all around. One of SAF young'uns. The lad done great, and people shouldn't be bitter or jealous. He was a top player, maybe not the best, but still a top player. I've always liked him.
