Of their time, yes. Was Jesse Owens better than Carl Lewis or Usain Bolt? Not statistically, maybe. But of his time, certainly. Was Bobby Charlton better than Rooney? Undoubtedly.
Bobby Charlton didn't have the benefit of hair growth transplants and regeneration. He did have the best comb over though

This bullshit token extra cap for Rooney is a farce. He was offered a call-up by Southgate for WC qualifiers, but turned him down. **** him, give Charlton a game and let him score 5 more goals to get back to top scorer.

Seems someone has realised how ridiculous it would be for him to actually play then. As I said in my earlier post he had earlier turned town a call-up from Southgate, so to give a token extra cap now would be plain wrong in my view. Not a pleasant individual, and overrated as a player in my opinion. He scored a lot of goals against inferior opposition, but, apart from the 2004 Euros, under-achieved for England when it mattered.

I disagree that he was overrated, although he did under perform in most major tournaments. This was mainly due to injuries and him not being fit. He was a player that did need a lot of time to regain form following injury imo, much like Kane. This is all separate to the kind of person he is and his ability. He was a fantastic goal scorer and had superb technical ability when many around him lacked it. I now hear he will get an appearance in the last few minutes. A fitting send off for England's all time scorer imo.

Bit of a shame really as he had them playing good football last season but they've gone to pot so far in the Prem......... I read yesterday a startling fact that so far this season the bottom 5 sides have played a combined 60 games and have won only 7 games between them, what's the point of being in the top flight to have to endure that sort of result week in week out........
The fans won't be happy, but I bet the Chairman and board will be more than pleased come the end of the season if they don't end up in the bottom three
If you do it with pride, dignity and haven’t spunked a fortune trying to buy safety in the process, it’s fine. What we did, and what Fulham have tried (good luck Claudio) was a stupid gamble. I’d be happy to go up, spend nothing, play with heart and get beaten, and come back down with £100m to build. And perhaps do that a couple of times.
So Rooney will play tomorrow (as a sub), will wear number 10 and will be given the captain's armband. It all smacks a bit of John Terry organising a guard of honour from the opposition when he got subbed in the 27th minute of his final game. As a football fan from across the globe, I don't know all the in's and out's of what Rooney has or hasn't done over the years so l can't comment on that. I can however comment on what l see from my perspective that Rooney has played consistently at the highest level and his goal tally doesn't lie. He could of gone to the good old US of A and taken as much coin and given little in return. This is not the case. Rooney has more than achieve with his US team. From the moment he arrived, he set a new standard for the club. He picked up training cones ( where most big name players wouldn't ) and did the hard yards at training, disciplining the younger players for not going the extra mile. I thought this spoke volumes of the man, as a player and a captain / leader. He didn't have to do it but he did. This why the team made the play offs for the first time. The way he chased down an attacking play, retrieved the ball and then sent a match wining pass to a player on goal, says everything about his professionalism and why he should received a genuine send off from the England faithful. Anyway, just my two bobs worth. As you were....................
