Givin the fingers to people by us Brits originated in the medieval Battle of Crecy

This is the first battle where the English longbow proved itself as the first and hugely effective artillery style weapon which utterly decimated the superior (in numbers) French forces.

The longbowmen could rapid fire arrows, arrowheads dipped in dirt and faeces, letting loose using the primary two fingers of their dominant hand, at much further range and with much more ballistic power than the crossbows the French were using.
