Even a 'quotable' manager like The Great Neil Warnock works in conjunction with his chairman, rather those in opposition to. Without knowing or hearing what goes on behind closed doors it's not fair to assume that LJ is a doormat to SL, whereas TGNW walks into Vincent Tan's office and tells him what's what. There's definitely a discussion to be had about the status of the club and LJ's position, but I think this argument is a bit flimsy. There are lots of people out there who have accused LJ of arrogance, which would be somewhat at odds with this point of view.
Though I agree that he isn't bombproof, he certainly is getting a level of support rarely seen anywhere in the country for many a year, though whether that's a good or a bad thing is down to personal opinion. I think it would take a lot for him to be given the axe - it's not completely inconceivable that he would even survive a relegation, though I think the outcry from supporters would be too much to ignore. Maybe if our terrible continues and come Christmas we're in the bottom three, with the majority of fans protesting, that MIGHT just be enough for SL to say that's enough. It would interesting to know if people's feelings are strong enough to say that they would welcome that turn of events in order to ought him.
Steve Lansdown set his parameters, 10th or above and a push for promotion if possible, we are appearing to be sinking but we (LJ) are not beyond his preferences yet, LJ is still safe and in the safety zone.
Did SL specifically say that? (Genuine question). That sounds a reasonable ambition for this season - had it not been for the departures, I would have suggested that a push for the playoffs should have been the ambition, but given the financial responsibilities it was a sound decision (in my opinion anyway), though choosing to allow Djuric to leave without signing another striker was a risk that unfortunately looks to have been a harmful one.
Yes, it was reported in the Post back in August.. What are the ambitions for the season? Lee asked me that at the end of last season as we were going through planning for the summer. My answer was that we have to finish higher than eleventh as we have to keep making progress. I obviously like to feel we'll be in the top half of the division, competing for the play-offs and maybe if we get it really right we could be heading for the top two. https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport...s/steve-lansdown-bristol-citys-season-1864970
Mediocrity is the order of the day and the punishment will continue until morale, or scorelines, improve. Doing the same boring things and expecting different outcomes was said to be how you define stupidity according to some genius guy. Mushrooms and bullshit comes to mind here.
To be fair, the ‘dire run’ of performances is only 2 games - we played well vs Stoke and lost due to some goalkeeping brilliance. That said, every poor performance and every loss weakens my support for LJ and the current setup. I’m not fickle enough to call for his head just yet but the last 2 results are unacceptable and he needs to turn it around or I will be reassessing my position. LJ in - for now.
One thing to note here I think as well... Back in the days when we went god knows how many games without a win, part of the reason I was still pro-LJ was simply the fact that there was no one out there suitable to replace him. I remember RR banging on about Gary Rowett but aside from that there was really no one out there available. Now though seems different, there are a few names dotted about and a few which could become available in the coming weeks, though admittedly some are slightly ambitious.
I would say all of these are 'ambitious' but there are certainly names going around: David Moyes - okay starting off overly ambitious but worthy of the list Steve Bruce - very good record Villa-aside, certainly an expensive possibility Slavisa Jokanovic - will be amazed if he lasts the season. Unlikely to get another Prem job so a drop down to the Championship is feasible Nigel Pearson - not my cup of tea, I'd hate to see him here but a possibility Mick McCarthy - decent record, stays at clubs for a long time, works under a budget Alan Pardew - clutching at straws again with this one to be fair but currently without a club That's just off the top of my head. I don't follow football too strongly so there will be other decent candidates that I haven't thought of. Regardless, the point is that the manager market has a lot more options than it did during LJ's last barren spell.
If I'm honest and it's only my opinion, out of all of those mentioned, Bruce would be the only one I'd be interested in. But can't see we could afford him, plus he would require loads more money for players. (and we moan what LJ has spent!!) The rest (mainly old school) just doesn't fill me with excitement....
You'll get nowhere with dear old 1For. Unless you want Roberto de Matteo. 1For used to scream his name from the roof tops to be manager of BCFC. As 1For would say, not my cup of tea.
Not sure any of the rest won Champions league RP... Who has done well for Villa since RP?? With all the millions....oh no don't mention spending !!
Oh god, Not Pearson and Pardew again?? wow, they've had some top roles since being sacked haven't they? No thank you
Forget about who will be our next manger because until someone in charge down at Ashton Gate decides who and what we really want to be in the future we are tilting at windmills. For years we have wandered around in a fog getting mixed, and sometimes totally confusing messages, from those who matter which leads to mixed ideas as to our purpose. I can't think of any manager who would take on the task with Bristol City until some of the promises actually bear some fruit and perhaps if a proven guy accepted the position based on our visible and touchable commitment to bettering the club then we may have a chance of moving upwards. The current set up with Lee in charge has never done it for me and unless SL is prepared to pull the plug I can't see anything changing for many seasons and even in that unlikely event our track record of hiring the right person is dismal at best. There has to be a change of attitude from the top down before we can truly move forward and regrettably I don't believe that will ever happen which in some ways is criminal when you consider the stadium upgrade, and the undying support of our followers, which is more than capable of handling a higher level of football. Wake up.
What complete bollocks!! You’ve no idea what SL is like, only stuff made up on here and other forums. Let’s put it into context, he has spent a fortune of his own money giving us a fantastic stadium to sit in. And yes he does hold all the keys but you talk about foreign managers being the plight of the game and yet we’ve got a Bristol born owner spending a fortune you complain. Make your mind up what it is you want, as you want him to spend money, then you want players through the academy. Yes he’s got a lot of money, but let’s remember it’s HIS money not ours. So let’s be grateful for what we’ve got as there has been a lot of clubs going pop. And the most common theme would be they’ve all been in the Prem and spunked the lot. As to potential next managers, I would suspect that they would relish the chance to work for someone who has not been trigger happy with the last/ latest manager.
To be quite honest Rod this is bricks and mortar he is putting up and that only improves in value. All he has done is put a small amount of his wealth into property he ain’t going to loose on that front.
Going to back you here Rod I would not be disappointed if that happened done well on limited resources at Burton. But I would love a Moyes or Pearson appointment.
