Rees-Mogg and Farage would tell you that it will. Foreign leaves, coming over here, ruining our trains. Leaves means Leaves!

Bloody foreign leaves coming over here, taking over our train lines, stopping honest British leaves from doing the job.

They could do an episode of Thomas the Tank.

Hello everyone, this is Thomas, thomas is a fine engine.
But today Thomas isn't working, as there are pesky leaves that have fallen,
    Thomas doesn't like Autumn ,
Thomas is gonna have a smoke instead.

Remember children smoking is bad for you.

    The End.

For good reason. Wet leaves get pulped under the wheels and reduce traction, meaning trains take longer to break, and therefore have to travel more slowly. Rail networks are not immune to climactic conditions.

In this grand age of technology there must surely be some solution to a problem that’s been haunting the rail network of generations.

Yes, they do. And they also have problems with trespassers on the line, trees leaning on overhead wires, snow and ice, all that stuff. But the more overstretched and underinvested the rail system is, the greater the impact on the service when something goes wrong, and the longer it takes to restore the service.

A few delayed trains and suddenly all the drivers and rolling stock are in the wrong place. Because our system in the UK is overloaded and under resourced, the impact of disruption is greater than it might otherwise be; still, since privatisation, at least the shareholders are still getting paid.

There is no technological solution that I can think of, to a phenomenon commonly known as “autumn”.

You can’t stop the leaves falling, and wet leaves will impact on even the most technologically advanced train. So you are left with two options; cut down all trees in the vicinity of a railway line - in other words commit an act of unconscionable ecological vandalism - or employ a small army of seasonal labour to clear the lines.

If you were going to go with the latter option, you would still need to close many lines and reduce the service to allow clearing of the leaves to happen safely. And it would be extremely expensive, because you couldn’t use untrained casual labour on a railway track, they would all have to be issued with Safety Critical Licenses for which they would have to be trained and tested.

WE CAN PAY STUDENTS AND PENSIONERS TO CLEAR THE LEAVES. OFFER THEM A DECENT WAGE AND THEY WILL COME.

IF THEY WON'T CLEAR LEAVES SEND THEM BACK.

    They're British.

    SEND THEM BACK.

    Where, they're British?

IT DOESN'T MATTER, SEND THEM BACK.

But where do you want to send them?

    THIS IS YOUR FAULT.

I would have thought that either a machine, or a train equipped with a track clearing mechanism would do the job.

Run thst through early every morning to clear the track as much as possible?
