I might take mrs. alwaysright on a boat ! ( it won't kill her! ) https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-46105884 If you bother to read the story - it states that the chap has admitted that he 'involuntarily' killed his wife ! " without malice" -- what the hell does that mean ?? - " I'm sorry Dear, but I don't like you and I'm afraid that I'm going to have to kill you !" -- (( he obviously didn't hate her - but that's best left to a different thread )). What I find incredible is that the chap faces a maximum of only 8 years imprisonment if he is found guilty ! What sort of 'punishment' is that ? Is it a surprise to read that he stood to inherit his wife's assets. The only surprise is that he endured three whole months of marriage before he disliked his wife enough to murder her. It does nothing to deter anyone from thinking to replicate the circumstances. Admittedly we all haven't got a private yacht - but I reckon I could get mrs alwayright on a li low and drag her out far enough if I suddenly start to dislike her ( but I'd never hate her )
encountering a bit of 'real' hostility has toughened me up! I have come back from Israel in what I believe is 'good form.' I have made a couple of contributions to this site this morning - and I can apologise for not issuing a public health warning - if you wish to 'engage' with me - you had better come armed - either with guns or with better ( some) argument. At the moment, I reckon I could take you all on and still have enough energy to act as the entire back line for tonight's game.
Why stop at 49 ? why not say you're 4.9 yeas old ?- not that you've got the academic standard of a toddler - idiot ! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-46133262
We will remember them Nimanja Matic ( Man Utd ) has defended his position - not to wear a poppy on his shirt. It is a form of 'protest at the Nato led forces to rid Serbs out of Kosovo ( where he lived ), in 1999. He states that innocent people were killed by Nato forces. I feel terribly sad for ALL innocent victims of war - and my sympathy extends to Matic and all the victims, and families and friends of those innocents killed in his village. Today, I went to a 'remembrance' service - and despite my hatred of war, I was proud to wear my medals - I'd like to think that my service to Queen and Country has helped to bring peace in the World. Unfortunately there will always be innocent victims - it is too difficult to avoid a few innocent casualties. Theirs is an unwitting sacrifice that means evil does not exist in that part of the world. These innocent victims deserve the same level of remembrance and respect for the sacrifice of their lives - just as much as any loss of military life. I can understand Matic's hurt - and maybe anger at the loss of members of his village - as victims of a term that is known as 'friendly fire.' - but - he needs to understand that those people were not the intended target - and were caught in the 'cross-fire.' The good people of the Nato forces have made it possible for Matic to be at liberty [today],to not wear a poppy on his shirt.
Nato's so called bombs of peace, I assume he is protesting about without looking in great detail. The EU's claim to 70 years of peace, but Yugoslavia didn't count because they weren't in the EU, Huh! Funny how the EU claims 70 years of peace but it can't actually send an army to war, that's Nato's job. Even the recent claim of the President of the EU Parliament, it was the EU that defeated the Nazi's. Seriously, he really did say that. So i sympathise with Matic, but i did choose to wear a poppy as i always do this time of year. Because it's for the people that gave their lives, not for the people that created the wars and Mastic is a person seeking justice for the unjust, and as you have said alwaysright, those people gave their lives for the liberty of the future, even if i do understand his cause and reasoning.
I think people misunderstand the meaning of remembrance, whilst it does have a tendency to focus on service personnel as the largest number of casualties, it is there to remember all the people who have lost their life to war.
A WILD poopy seed can lay dormant in the ground for up to 80 years, maybe even more. Nature takes it course when the ground is disturbed (trenches) - and the climate conditions are right. The red poppy, does not require the extreme temperatures of the white, that is seen in the likes of Texas and South California. Hence why we have the red poppy, because nature gave it to us. It grew where the brave men fell
What price loyalty ? ( asked by an idiot who purchased a 2 year Gills season ticket.) You can always find deals for 'new' customers..... but - deals for '2nd year' customers are rare - however - I am adept at searching price comparison sites, and have email alerts to assist me in finding the 'best' available 'deal' (( price is not necessarily the top criteria .)) Today I received an email alerting me of broadband deals that are part of the Black Friday promotions. One 'deal' is £53 less than mine. The second offer is £74 less. Both deals are also offering £ 75 of vouchers of a 'top' supermarket --- By coincidence, my own broadband provider is offering the same vouchers to 'new customers.' I phoned 'my' provider and made an enquiry. I stated the deals that I had seen. I asked what they could offer me. After a few minutes they offered a discount of £3.45 for 3 months !! ( a total of £10. 35p. ) (( WOW )). I enquired if they would be willing to 'throw in' the vouchers. They said " No." -- so, I told them that I was disappointed with their poor attempt to reward my loyalty. I asked them if they understood my ' position,' in that I could save almost £64 more by 'switching' provider - and have enough vouchers to pay for a huge turkey at Christmas -- all that my current broadband company was offering me was 'stuffing' (( ...see what I did there ? )) My sense of humour did not impress my broadband provider - who refused to reconsider my bid ---- oh well, their loss ...... looks like I'll be having a cracker of a Christmas (( I don't know why I'm so cheerful - after all, I do support The Gills - not exactly 'laugh a minute. ))
It's a good job that Gills don't advertise " Happy Games"! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-46243072 Hey - Mr.Stupid - It's called advertising! what do you propose next? - ban all toy commercials on television ( I'm fairly sure a lot are targeted at under 13s.) This man is the sort of idiot who thinks that parental responsibility and choices for his children, is that of everyone else. Nobody forces you to buy anything that you deem inappropriate for your children. He argues more on the point of the advertising of the toys in McDonalds happy meals - rather than the nutritional 'value' of the food available - and yet - he still takes his kids there many times during the year ! The real complaint is that it's going to cost him more money to return to McD's to get more toys for his kids -- but that is his choice - Nobody is forcing him - just as nobody forces me to spend more money returning to Priestfield......... it's a shame that the toys are already broken !
Without being a killjoy, I actually think he has a point. Let's take ourselves back about 40 years, where smoking was common place, i don't think many imagined that it would be banned and from all places, where adults can make those same choices, from pubs. You might remember a phrase i often use, one rule always leads to another. I think McDonalds and Coca Cola have escaped under the radar for a very long time. As the consumer is claiming, they target kids. Let's give you an alternative example, whatever happened to sweet (candy) cigarettes, like everything else they were re-marketed to candy sticks (no longer reflective of cigarettes) - because it like everything else was said it encouraged kids to smoke (or pretend to smoke) from an early age. I've been a smoker since a very young age, I'm still alive (many are not) but i don't get a choice about where and when i want to smoke, i am dictated to by the law....so as i said earlier, one rule leads to another, why should McDonalds be allowed to promote processed foods to kids, i paste you a quote from the very question about it's 'healthiness'... The average McDonald's meal contains so much sodium, unhealthy fat, sugar and empty carbs, it's staggering. It is the exact opposite of what any doctor or nutritionist (even the good ol' USDA MyPlate) would consider a healthy diet. Some years ago on my journeys across the States, the land of the Marlboro man, where everyone changed their habits because he died of cancer, i had an argument with an American, quite a large American....why am i being so polite...An enormous American, he complained my smoke had drifted his way, my response was, if you stopped the disgusting smell of McDoanalds drifting under your nose and in to your stomach, we would both be in an healthier place. I choose to smoke, some people choose to eat crap, why should the same health rules not apply. I can hear the excuses already, but your smoke affects others, yes, true, and McDonalds Advertising along with Coca Cola's pending Christmas advert that usually starts to hit our screens this time of year, affects every kid.
They do ban adverts that are considered political, or at least ones that embarrass the powers that be. I'm sure that there can be no one who has missed the banned Iceland advert, but here it is anyway.
brb You are absolutely correct in your assessment of the {lack of} nutritional value of the food served in McDonalds. There are MANY other eating establishments ( Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut etc, etc ,etc ), who shouldn't escape some criticism for adding to poor diet decisions --- I suppose we choose McD for sheer volume of numbers. --- where do we stop [[ Cadbury, Walkers crisps, Greggs pies, McVitie's biscuits, Coca Cola, Pepsi, ]]. The problem with these foodstuffs is that they can be 'appealing' to the palate - and difficult not to indulge --- but, they need to be 'controlled,' - either by way of self-discipline, or by parents --- but -- we all know that this simply doesn't happen - hence the health issues that could be avoided. My original point actually states that the priority of the complainant was not concerning the health issues relating to consuming too much 'rubbish food.' The chap was more annoyed at being hounded by his kids to keep returning to McDonalds so that they complete the'set' of toys available with a 'Happy Meal.' Undoubtedly it was (is) costing him more money than he might be able to afford. It appears ( to me), that he cares more about his money than the health of his children ---------- and is showing poor parental responsibility. He could easily achieve the economy he craves, AND reduce the likelihood of his children becoming obese, if he restricts (( I'm not saying prohibit )), the number of 'Happy Meals' he gets for his children.
I agree. I think the government has a problem related to my earlier post, that is actually also related to money than the health of the nation. The government is no longer happy it is not receiving the same income from taxation on cigarettes. So now the government has introduced the sugar tax - if i'm to apply the same fairness that the government applied to smokers, that taxation is not high enough. So why is not high enough, is that because the government don't want to play big brother or is it because it does not want to upset the global brands, guess which one i think. Going slightly off topic, let me give you another example. The increase in fines on speeding. It was said...the increase can be ploughed back in to policing. So hang on a minute here, the government and the police are applying double standards - what they are in fact saying, we don't want to increase the fines too high, to stop you speeding altogether, because we want you to pay for the police force. It's a bit like the days of free gifts at petrol stations, could you imagine the uproar now...if you burn up enough fossil fuel we'll give you a gift The hypocrisy of life.
brb speeding fines ! -- crime deterrent - British justice ? -- You are joking ? 'Attacking' motorists is an easy option. Motorists are 'cash cows'. It could be said that if you don't speed, you won't get a ticket ! 'Speeding motorists' are a bit like anyone who overindulge at places like McDonalds --- they're not 'bad' people -- but they are creating problems for themselves, others around them and a stain on essential services It is often said ( by the recipient of a speeding ticket ),that police should be looking for 'real criminals.' --- but -- that's just it - speed kills -- far more people than killed by 'real criminals.' We could argue for a long time about law and order - and the priority of public services. Each of us will have a different agenda -- and be able to justify our viewpoint. At the end of the day - it is all about money. We all want to see more police on the streets - but - don't want them to apply the law to us if we do 35 mph in a 30 mph area - and we certainly don't want to pay anymore Council Tax. The same applies to other critical public services. Politics is a very personal subject. And - as you know - money is in total control of politicians.
The problem is we encourage companies to continue bad practices, the Iceland advert proves it, they are trying to protect the environment and their advert gets banned. At the same time consumers still flock to McD's knowing all the dangers, people still choose pre-packaged vegetables in plastic bags because it's convenient, we still use nondegradable plastic bottles rather than fully recyclable glass. As consumers we should hold the power, don't buy it and companies stop making it, trouble is most people don't care.
Parental control? Parental choice and guidance? What bleddy planet are you living on? All you have to do is sit outside a fast food outlet, anyone of them, and watch the number of fat kids and teenagers who go in and get a bag full of the only food most of them will eat. They come out with a carton or plastic cup full of sugar disolved in a mud drink. They go home and sit on their fat arses and press buttons on an electronic gadget for hours until it's bedtime. They take a mobile phone to bed with them and hide under the blankets continuing to text their mates and anothers hanging about on the sites pretending to be fat useless kids to fit in until the small hours. They then get up and go to school for a kip only to repeat the previous days events when that chore is over. Groundhog day has nothing on real life of a child in 2018. No wonder I reach for my ***s and have turned to strong drink. Nobody is healthy anymore except the Gym rats who just show off.
grumpygit The choices people make these days ( in my opinion ), are often dictated by one of two things; 1. Cost. To use anything, such as glass, instead of plastic, is going to cost more. For a lot [probably almost all ], of us, a major consideration when making a purchase is the price (( although judging by the collective debt of the country, you wouldn't think that was relevant.)) - however - whilst I make this claim, price is hardly a consideration by people who spend money at Mc Donalds. The cost of their products is ridiculous - compared with 'real food.' I am not surprised that the complainant in the article is complaining about the damage to his wallet - you need a small fortune to buy the rubbish in Mc D's ( etc ) ------- so - why do people still spend a lot of money in McDonald's if real food is cheaper ? 2. Laziness ( some say convenience ) People, in general, have become too lazy - as to buy, prepare and cook 'real food.' They, too often, choose to go to McDonalds (etc), or order a takeaway - because it's easy. They don't have to do any work ( if they actually know how to boil an egg ! ) -- and laziness even extends to a lot of people who actually bother to cook 'real food. I refer to all the ready peeled / sliced / diced / roasted / mashed / boiled foodstuffs that make our potato peeler redundant. All these items will be much dearer than the 'raw' ingredient, and will invariably come in plastic packaging - adding to the problems for the environment ---- and laziness is very much relevant when it comes to recycling. The % of waste that is recycled in Britain is very low. Manufacturers will not change their processes whilst consumers continue to pay for anything that is processed and packaged. Of course, it can be argued that we lead busy lifestyles these days - with more households which have both mum & dad out at work. They would rather relax than have to prepare and cook 'proper' meals. These people do have a point ( to some degree. ) They will also state that their double incomes allows them to spend their money how they like ( another valid point ) --- but these points are the exception ---- THAT BEING; Laziness is such a dominant force that it overrides other factors in the equation - such as price, effect on our health and the environment. - The complainant in my original post, is a spendthrift, irresponsible and lazy parent - who doesn't care about the health of his children - or the Planet. I don't feel sorry for the health of his empty wallet.
sensiblegreeny can you hear my ' sigh ?' -- sadly, you are correct ------- but please don't use the word bleddy (?) I don't know what that means - you may , however continue to use 'arse' - I am very familiar with that sort of person [[ he glances over to the mirror on the wall ]]
alwaysright - you got me thinking, when you rightly stated you could get real food for cheaper. So i did a bit of research as i rarely buy a McDonalds, i actually cannot even think when i last bought one, probably at a motorway service area on a long journey. My google results showed that the average price give or take for a burger, with fries and a drink is about a fiver (extra value meal ranged from 4.59 to 6.09) - excluding any extras. This does not include signature meals which are more expensive. A child's Happy Meal averages 2.79 but wait for this....if they want the additional healthy option of carrot sticks it's 79p! For 79p I could buy enough carrots to feed 100 kids for the portion size McDonalds is likely to give you. So what does real food cost? I had a quick look on the ASDA website, excluding ALDI and the other German supermarket, probably cheaper than the rest (i guess). A 2.5kg of spuds for 1.30 - they looked pretty decent quality even washed for you. Oh and British. I think we would all agree 2.5kg would feed a large family easily. Next up them carrots... 65p so cheaper than McDonalds small portion of sticks by 14p....for a 1kg bag! Again enough to feed that large family. Now by my basic reckoning i've only spent 1.95 so i've still got 3.05 left to spend... Medium whole chicken at 2.85...which leaves me 20p change. Ok I've got to take the time to cook it and the cost of electric/gas....but remember i fed a whole family cheaper than an individual McDoanlds meal with fresh produce and all British produce. Imagine what i could feed them if i used the whole cost of that family McDonalds visit. But in a nutshell, what did all that prove, it proved as you stated in your very last sentence LAZINESS
