I thought we did poorly In the transfer market! Still in disbelief over Danny Seaborne, poor chap, I know it's on another thread!
I agree sometimes people are a bit hostile but I think it's best to take it with a pinch of salt and like someone said above not personally!

I think after a while you get to recognise the style of the posters. Some, (you know who you are!) can scarcely post anything which isn't dripping with irony and they may not use emoticons.
Those who are just WUMS it is pointless to engage with, but the line between Wumming and banter can be a fine one. I suppose its a bit like being down the pub , being on here. There are loads of conversations going on. You might get chatting with someone and have a different opinion. As long as everybody is polite there is not a problem. If someone can't hold their ale and gets insulting and personal then the atmosphere changes and and many head for the exits.
I have always liked the atmosphere on here. Long may it continue.

You are right we do need a striker in case of injuries etc. The thing i like about this Adkins side is that we don't just rely on Strikers for goals defenders and midfielders seem to chip in with goals too.

Is it not true though ladies and gentlemen, that it is nice to be able to actually discuss things with fellow football fans, across the country and even across the world.
The fact we cannot always agree should make things more interesting. As it is a natural instinct to try and change someones mind to an alternative point of view. With the vast majority if the person cannot be persuaded, they will agree to disagree and leave it at that. There is a tiny minority that feel for what ever reason the only way to win a difference of opinion is to start name calling and making personal remarks.
How wrong can they be........they should realise that as soon as they go down this road.....no matter how strong their subject argument is, they have lost the argument. Nobody is interested in the core discussion any more, only countering the personal retorts.
Other posters have suggested that we mods should interfere more to stop this kind of thing. We do when things really get out of hand, but we are not policemen!
You are all supposedly adults or very near and should take responsibility for what you post. What is wrong with you other posters at the time, telling the original insulting poster to quite that type of posting and if you feel it necessary to alert us, as some already do. Then just ignore him or her. (Who could ignore our Jen or Fran)
We the mods try our damnedest not to interfere and in the main seem to get the fine balance right according to most posters that care to mention our roll at all. Also please remember that by the time we are involved we have to make judgements on what we see is happening on only a couple of threads either side of perhaps the most discerning post. We haven't got time to read the whole thing before making judgements.
Every one is entitled to an opinion no matter how outlandish.....and have a right to express it. The judgment we have to make is usually in the way you present that opinion. The same can be said about the level of swearing, There is no harm in the occasional expletive to emphasise a point perhaps, but swearing for swearing sake is outlawed. In the main we on the Saints board are good about this kind of thing and we seem to respect the fact that we do have an occasional youngster read our offerings.
However to the poster who yesterday commented on the fact that he thought we should restrict the swearing so that his children could read the postings.
Sorry Sir this is in the main an adult site, it is though a football forum. We the fans are usually very good about swearing, you do though have a no swearing facility down the bottom of the page, please use it
To sum up folks, just remember the thread may be of no interest to you. It may not be your cup of tea, so why feel the need to tell us or the author that you are not interested. We will automatically see that because you will not have posted. Just be a bit more understanding and thoughtful to your fellow poster.......BT

It was me complaining about the swearing. I'm not against swearing on the whole. most will use asterisks or initials for a saying like WTF.

What I was complaining about was a single poster who once his post was disagreed with posted personal attacks to the person who disagreed and swore directly at the replier. calling him a w****r (in capitals without the asterisks.)

Anyway where is this no swearing facility? I may only be 36 but I sometimes have the eyes of a very old Monet.

If you scroll right down to the bottom, it's there on the left. A little dropdown box that has the options for swearing and no swearing.

No swearing drop down is on bottom left corner of the main Saints page. Not sure where it is on the iPhone App.

My motto is "everyone is entitled to my opinion". ;)

well just seen it and....it is already set to 'no swaering' so it don't work. I assume because mrX the poster from the other day put spaces inbetween each letter of his capitalised W * * * * R.

So any other suggestions ;) Other than only opening the forum after the kids have gone to bed?

Let's say the word Portsmouth is a swear word - all it would do is, if somebody typed Portsmouth, change it to **********. If someone typed P O R T S M O U T H it wouldn't be filtered, nor would even Pórtsmóúth.

Sadly it's the nature of the site, an open forum that sadly isn't designed for children. As far as I'm aware you legally have to be 13+ to register to a forum anyway and most 13 year olds know their swear words anyway. As Beddy said it's an adult forum, so there isn't anything that can be done.

Thats a pity. Only forum I go on where it isn't removed and warnings given out. Including the one I am a MOD on :(

Those other forums are also 13+ to register.

Will have to be more careful when I view then. Thanks for the help though guys :)

It's a difficult balance. I don't know how old your children are, but if they go to St Marys they will certainly know the words!
The BBC site once refused to accept a post of mine because it included the word merchant! We really don't want to be like that. Anyway, where would you draw the line?

Two others I go on, one is very strictly moderated (even starring it out is punished) and the other is probably more lax than here. There's no consistency on the internet, which is a shame for those who prefer forums to be child friendly. Don't have a problem with swearing personally (as many on here will have noticed) but I'm sorry that the rules of the site don't make it a child friendly place for your kids, and I'm not actually aware of a Southampton forum that bans swearing, here and Saintsweb are the only ones I use though. Don't let it put you off coming on, though, we could always use active members :)

EDIT: Could we just draw the line under the example ImpsSaint used of people putting spaces between letters? If people just swear normally (as we are fully allowed to) then it censors the words out for those who have no swearing selected - everybody is happy. But the entirely meaningless practice of spelling it as P O R T S M O U T H instead of just writing it bypasses censors for no reason.

    if you put "no swearing" on and go read some of the threads on general chat they look like this;

    *** *** ****** ******* *** ***** *** ****** ******* ** **** ****** *****

Thats fair enough. and no they don't know the words. They are 5 and 6 but able to read very well at a distance. lol. If I hear them say anything they picked up from some other child at school they are very quickly informed they should not be using it.

Where to draw a line? Merchant is fine on any forum I go on as is a**e, p**s etc. Just the biggies like w*****, f*** and c*** really. Although I know what you mean r.e. swear filters. one of the forums I go seems to delete all sorts of different words that aren't swear words. lol. This same forum's swear filter catches the spaced out ones too :) So some people use commas, differing spaces, numbers to represent letters etc. which then have to be moderated out and warnings given :)

Oh well back to school tomorrow so some peace and quiet for me. Can finally do some work in the daytime again.lol
