I don't think driving a racing game is easier than driving a real car, just a lot different, the main difference is psychological. I think the nerds will win because it's what they do
In F1 2009, I can set a 1:04.6 around Monaco (by cheating) and 1:27.6s around Abu Dhabi (not by cheating). These times are much quicker than anything anyone has produced in real life. I think this is because the physics in the game are not calibrated to the exact real-world conditions exerienced outside a video game. Things like wind speed and direction aren't calculated making the lap times more artificial and inaccurate.
I hate to say it, but I don't think DC will win. As someone has said, Jeremy Clarkson set at time in the Honda NSX at Laguna Seca on GT4, and then did it in real life. His first lap was 20 seconds off the pace, and then he could only manage to knock 4 seconds off his real life time. But then again, as Jeremy said, he couldn't push himself to go faster cause racing drivers have learnt to get rid off all of the fears of crashing. On that basis, I think it'll be close, but DC will just miss out on winning. Put him on the PS3 and he would thrash them after he gets used to it
You would have to assume that the gamers would win this race, because DC, as he is really driving, has the possibility of being killed to contend with, whereas the gamers only need to spin the car back around if they were to crash.
I'm sure 5th gear tried a similar stunt, Forza 3 vs Johnny Herbert. The gamers won this one, because of the decreased risk factor of playing a console game, as opposed to actually driving a car quickly.
As others have already said - and even if the simulator is 100% accurate - the consequences of an error are light years away from reality for a gamer who can throw his controller in disgust and make a coffee… To add weight to this argument, if you take two professional drivers of identical technical ability and in real cars - but one of them has no fear of the consequences of an error for himself or his £300,000 car, the outcome should be obvious: either the carefree driver crashes or wins. Fear is part of real motor-sport: living on the edge for real is not for the faint hearted unless one is also suicidal.
There is no way in hell i would attempt to put a Honda NSX through 130r at suzuk at speeds over 120mph in real life, yet on gran turismo i do it whilst texting some friends. Computers give us untalented drivers (me) the chance to feel like a superhero of sorts.
I'm not even sure how to respond to that. But I'm pretty sure that Parkour in a video game isn't any harder than chucking yourself off a building.
As someone who has thrown himself out of a 2nd storey window (for a bet), i can safely tell you that parkour is far easier (and far less painful) if you choose to pursue it on a video game instead.
If anybody interested Watch a live stream of the Coulthard vs gamers race at telegraph.co.uk/motoring on Monday, September 5, at 3pm.
DC won by half a second and on a 1:16 lap that is pretty good, especially with the weather and tyre factors.
Well, I beat a few of the people at the track being shown. I only used the controller, so i could go faster than i did. I dont think I could get the 1 15 4 (latest record I saw).
