I was secretly hoping it would turn into a fight. It didn't go as I'd expected. I thought I'd have to defend myself from accusations of hating the english. I was chatting to a folk band I know. They have an english guitarist. The rest are Irish. They reckon that the english guy adheres to more rules about music than they do.....whatever that means.
check this hash http://www.we7.com/#/song/Neck/Spancil-Hill That is my song when it is inappropriate to sing war songs.
not folk....but hey. From that tradition.
Although the English have great folk bands, I personally don't think anythings up there with The Pogues. Personal preference though I guess
I like it. I think it is good. Music with a conscience can be universal but a lot of Irish music speaks about a specific set of circumstances that hasn't affected the english and it is difficult to relate to..... I guess. i know it is a chiche to talk about immigration all the time, but it is true I guess.
Mainstream means saying **** all controversial....then it ceases to be folk music imo, just a folky sounding pop song.
Absolutely spot on there Rebs how could an Englishman write this from a prison cell?
They have to be saying something though. Maybe I have mixed up folk music with protest songs to an extent but that is certainly the genre that delivers it more than any other. Hip hop is perhaps taking up the baton where folk musicians have left it down. In broad terms our folk songs are all framed by our relationship to england (the oppressor) whereas yours are often to do with a social angst about the government of the time and the social fabric. excuse me posting another Christy version, but this is a song by an englishman complaining about Thatchers Britain. It is now ours as it has become synonymous with Christy and therefore the irish experience of Thatchers Britain as opposed to yours.... I think it has become more powerful as a result, although you may disagree.
