Bought myself a paper poppy today, went to stick my fiver in the box and it only had a slot for coins so i asked for change (joking) I've got one of those metal pin poppies but still contribute each year. They also have an online shop for those interested...https://www.poppyshop.org.uk/charity-jewellery/football-club-poppy-pins.html
My best mate is off down to Lympstone next week, (marines training centre) for a reunion. Lots of old war stories etc. blah blah blah.. He asked if i wanted to go. I said 'no ****ing way, i'm done with all that ****'. It's good people dwell on the past. I like to block it out. But just get annoyed when people dismiss ****.
Matic refusing to wear a poppy: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/46099843 Kick him out the country, burn him etc etc
If McClean gets threats and stick for refusing to wear one why the sympathetic reaction from the media for Matic and his(similar to McClean's)reasons for not wearing one? Either Matic is as much of a twat as McClean or McClean has as much of a valid reason not wear one as Matic.
Only modern day Britain or America would this bollox even be discussed. Absolutely yes to red poppy. Wearing one now. Never forget the suffering others have endured for us to have the freedoms we have today.
What do we think of the veterans refusing to wear a poppy? They feel it doesn't represent the fallen in ww1 and 2 but is about current conflicts and justifying them. Have to say I think the current criticism of not wearing one and the fuss on tv etc has coincided with current wars. Imo there wasn't a fuss in the past.
Right on both counts. I've seen documentaries where British soldiers who fought in the conflicts find it acceptable to shake hands with their former enemies, the same enemies who's comrades slaughtered many British and allied soldiers who had surrendered, fair enough as far as I'm concerned because...it's their choice just like McClean and Matic.
That is correct, but his refusal to wear a poppy compared to McClean has been sympathetically by comparison.
McClean is seen as a slight against ‘us’. Matic is a slight against some other foreigners we don’t care about. Obviously neither are doing anything wrong and it’s just something for massive gammons to work themselves up over.
As far as I'm aware no one has ever fought for my freedoms, they've fought for their own, mine were just collateral.
