The first top hat was worn in January 1797 by Mr John Hetherington, it caused such a stir he was arrested on the spot for public disorder offences
"Hetherington appeared on the public highway wearing upon his head what he called a silk hat … a tall structure having a shining luster, and calculated to frighten timid people. As a matter of fact … several women fainted at the unusual sight, while children began screaming, dogs yelped, and a younger son of Cordwainer Thomas … was thrown down by the crowd which collected and had his right arm broken”.

    Having a chat’
A commonplace expression today that owes its origin to that most pernicious of insects, the louse. Body lice were endemic in the trenches, and they inhabited the seams and pleats of clothing where they bred in huge numbers, causing skin rashes and itching.

The expression is often ascribed to the Hindi word for a parasite, ‘chatt’, but is more possibly from an earlier medieval English word for idle gossip, ‘chateren’. Soldiers in the Napoleonic Wars certainly referred to lice as ‘chats’. During the Great War it was common to see small groups sitting around and talking as they used their fingernails, or a candle, to kill the lice. Such groups were described as men who were ‘chatting’.

The British govt had declared the suffraggettes terrorists. The movement actually hell back women's rights and votes.

Emily davison who died under the king's horse had served time for planting an explosive devices in the home secretaries house

The women did campaigns of bombings at train station and churches in the etc and sending vials of poison etc to key targets. The vials would break and burn postmen etc

    Nasty bitches
