Just heard a rumour that we signed him on a 1 year deal pay as you play?

Anyone else heard this or want to discuss it?

He can **** right off for a start

I want Ba, Best and Sammy to all start ahead of Beattie. I'd maybe even push for Shola and Lover too

This. We aren't desperate enough to get a freebie. We can make do with the rest of them for now

Saw someone post it on facebook, no sauce and not a cwarr tweet I hope.

Just wanted to know if anyone else heard this or what they thought about it. I think if it is true he will be a Kuqi-esque signing but I don't see the point in it at all really. Shows how much the board rates our current strike force.

Aye his name was batted about the other day a bit

It's not really the same as with Kuqi though. With Kuqi he was here to fill a gap due a lack of strikers. This time we have enough strikers to all play ahead of Beattie. (Ba, Best, Sammy, Shola, Lover, Ranger at a push. I'd probably play like Airey ahead of him too). And if they ALL get injured then we deserved to get ****ed over to be honest. It's a lack of decent strikers that's the problem, and Beattie is in NO position talent wise to fill THAT gap.

Baffling, really! <laugh> Hope it's just a rumour!

Would be last resort, but I would prefer a premiership standard player... If I was Pards id give Ba and Obertan a go up top. Ba maybe better on his own when Ben Arfa is back to slot him in.

I'd sort of agree with this but we can't drop Best - he will be confident atm

Ba and Best up top, Obertan is better on the wing than as a striker.
Ba should do better now he's had some food and drink.

Yeah I agree - in the future I think Obertan could be a striker - sort of Henry like haha

As embarrassing as it may be to find us scrabbling around in football's bargain bin for these kind of players, if indeed we are, these kind of signings logically make sense.

I was no big Beattie fan during his prime and the thought of him potentially plodding about in our vacant number 9 shirt now leaves me cold, but if it (god forbid) happened what have you lost?
It's only really about pride and if he never played he wouldn't get paid and if he was picked as a last resort and popped up with just one fluke goal it could be worth three points.

From rumours I've heard, I'd be more concerned about Beattie's character and whether he's a personality that would have a negative effect on the training ground. However if you believe what Kuqi brought to the place, even the experience of being a professional player who has been around the block a bit can be positive.

Looking at it with a calm head, on balance any extra bodies for the squad however close they are to being considered for the first team can never be that harmful surely?

That said, I don't think we need him and I doubt very much it'll happen...

I've heard about Beattie being a dodgy character. Any ideas on what he has done to give him this reputation?

Well personally I prefer to take those kind of rumours and stories with a pinch of salt. I'd heard a few things from Southampton fans about his behaviour outside football but how fair and accurate they were is debatable.

Let's face it, many of those guys also haven't got great things to say about Pardew!

Does make you think though but unfortunately I'm probably more surprised when I hear stories about players being quite decent, grounded human beings...
