What's the reasoning for going back three seasons though? Not sure how three seasons worth of football is relevant to the here and now. Three season ago I would've still been saying Hugo is one of the top five keepers in Europe, likewise I would've also been saying Dembele is one of the best midfielders in the division/ Europe. Going back three years is a bit extreme in my opinion. Players begin to decline, so while they were exceptional three years ago, they could now be mediocre. This is where I feel we're at with regards to Lloris (and Dembele). What were initially mainstays and key players in the side, are now somewhat becoming hindrances.
Because Spurlock's stat was that he'd made more mistakes over the last 3 seasons than anybody. Now, whether that meant this and the previous 2 or the previous 3 i do not know https://www.not606.com/threads/transfer-thread-fact-and-fiction.343033/page-442#post-12251387
I think we all kinda agree tbh. I think he could do with some time on the bench and i agree Gazza has been good and didn't deserve to be dropped (especially from the bench). I just don't agree we should be looking to sell Lloris as i still think he is our best GK. I also don't think the mistakes stat holds much weight as the sample size is low because of the turnover of 3 seasons worth of appearances (if that makes sense). If there is a better stat (eg, mistakes per 90mins) that might show something different, or it might back it up. I have no idea.
Gotcha, I presume he means previous three before this though could be wrong. If what Spurly said is true, and you've worked out that give or take there's been about 10 keepers who've played in that time frame for a significant amount of games, that's still extremely poor for a keeper of his supposed stature. As I've said, Hugo will forever be recognised as one of our best ever keepers but from watching him over the past 12-15 months, he's been a shadow of that player and I think it's time to start planning ahead. Time on the bench will only make him want to leave anyway I think, he himself has made no secret of the fact he's remained at Spurs because of Poch, so if Poch starts benching him, I think he'd seek an exit at the earliest opportunity.
I don't think we can ever truly use a stat to assess this, just get an idea. A "sweeper keeper" like Lloris is much more likely to make mistakes coming off his line. Most of his mistakes are of this nature IMO. Barca was, the PSV sending off was etc etc. I don't recall him making many shot stopping mistakes or mistakes on crosses (maybe 1 or 2?). Be interesting to see how many mistakes this new breed of keepers makes over the same sort of time period. Alisson for sure has already made one this season. Ederson had 1 or 2 last year i think. That's the risk you take for the benefit of having a sweeper keeper though. The benefit being out on pitch.
whilst he's been solid and pulls of spectacular saves, he's easily let soft ones in over the years due to weak wrists. What made it worth it was his ability to sweep up effectively As for obvious glaring ones, the 2 against City last year were outrageous
Eugh, yeah i forgot those. I still stand by it though. Sweeper keepers allow you to press more effectively. You risk mistakes coming out but the benefit is a more effective press which i think works more often than the sweeping mistakes count against.
For sure, all keepers make mistakes that's the nature of their position but Hugo's seem to be becoming more frequent. Even if we exclude previous seasons, this season alone, we've seen him cost us in Europe twice while against Cardiff he was bailed out by Toby. So that's two mistakes he was punished for and one he got let off, he's only played 8 games overall (6 Prem, 2 CL). As good as he's been for Spurs, I'd hate for it to all be tainted if he continues making errors.
I'm in total agreement about this season for him. It's been a total clusterfuck so far. We haven't even mentioned the drink driving in this conversation either. That clearly won't have helped his mental state either. He definitely needs to get himself together.
Yeah, it's probably aided his troubles. It was so surprising as well, if someone had asked me which Spurs player I thought was most likely to be a stupid dick and get done for drink driving, I genuinely think Hugo would be the last person I'd have said.
I'd have gone with Lamela i think. He looks like a drinking down the park kinda teenager from his IG pics
Hugo's main weakness seems to be the near post, as he's beaten there a hell of a lot - and it's certainly not just playing for us, as he let in Portugal's winner in the Euro 2016 final in the same place
If he takes more risks he will make more mistakes. If he saves twice as many one on ones by rushing out of his goal then that makes up for the mistakes. I'm sure there are proper stats on this available to the club.
The issue for me with Hugo goes beyond the occasional blooper - and those are getting more frequent. I am far more concerned with his poor distribution and the general impact that his lack of composure is having on the defenders in front of him. The last few years saw us largely lose the ‘pushover’ tag, good going forwards but leaky defending. With Hugo at his best and Toby and Jan in front of him, we acheived the lowest goals against figures in the last 50 years. Don’t think it’s a coincidence that this season we have looked shaky and giving away chances like confetti. Is it recoverable? Possibly, but history suggests otherwise. Love Hugo, but I think it’s time to look for another #1. Whether Gazza can become that long term is far from certain, but we wouldn’t lose anything by giving him a shot.
I agree, mate. It's not easy saying you want to replace Hugo, everyone loves him and as I've already said, he's up there with Jennings and Ditchburn as one of our greatest keepers but ultimately things in football change, players lose form and decline. We've seen it with Dembele and it seems we're seeing it with Hugo too. It's probably not 'helped' Hugo that Gazza has been so good. If Gazza had been basic or ****e, we probably would be turning more of a blind eye to Hugo's mistakes and form but the fact Gazza has been ****ing immense in every game he's played, it's begging the question as to why he's not been given an extended run as first choice. Including his one game last season, he's played 5 games and won 4 MOTM awards (today was the first day he'll likely not win it thanks to young Foyth)... If that was an outfield player, there's no way they'd be dropped after that sort of form, so I don't see why it's different for a keeper.
The Lloris vs Gazza question IMHO is being wrongly influenced by the fact that he is WC/Spurs captain. No manager generally likes dropping their long-term captain due to form. A good manager has no qualms about doing so. A good player similarly notes the decision and works hard to raise their game in response.
