Flying is still the safest method of transport.

only if you use per mile travelled, rather than per hour travelling or by journey, and restrict your 'flying' to major commercial airlines.

Depends how you are measuring it. Most measurements are done for planes not helicopters. Research in 2009 suggested that helicopters crash 35 percent per hour more in the air than planes, although the fatality rate is lower, but then again if you compare that an helicopter carries way less passengers than an aeroplane that figure is distorted.

However, you are correct as a death rate overall for all forms of transport, your chances of dying in a car is 5,000/1 - your chances of dying in the air is 11,000,000/1

5,000/1 chance of dying in a car accident, sorry, but that's a BS use of statistics to prove a poor argument, it's basically saying everyone will die in a car accident, because most people will take over 5,000 car journey's in their lifetime.

The Chinooks were known to crash. Horrible things..

But these little dinky toys that rich people use should be fairly reliable.

Unless those odds are the average chances of dying ever rather than per journey.

I hate the ethics of a helicopters propulsion, been a lot of disasters over the years in the UK, mainly the rig lads going offshore. I'd imagine their maintenance has to be spot on and not done on the cheap.. <whistle>
