The attitude is crazy isn't it? They're so attached to their toys that they refuse to see the overwhelming evidence, not to mention just plain logic, that the proliferation of weapons is the problem and not the solution.
I think it is largely an age issue. When the kids of today grow up they are largely against guns and the older people are largely for guns. Eventually demographics will favour banning guns.
I don't agree. I have limited evidence. I was talking to what I'd call a "party girl" form mid west recently. she booked herself business class in trip over to where we were. she gleefully explained how she bought herself a gun etc. there was another guy who was more classic red neck bar he was originally from Hawaii and was on about shooting anyone who came near his property. I've just met too many older yanks who are far more sensible and a few loons. I think the more recent wars aka Afghanistan and Iraq will have raised and trained another generation of gun toting loons and the rest seem brainwahsed a bit to me to beleive its the or right. btw I talked to a trump fan who had Hispanic background too. He was absolutely into the cult of celebrity and off the apprentice and how he did it. didn t give a **** about any morals.
Any element of money and power involved then? Texas and a few other states there is a lot of money thrown around. They might have a bigger influence on politics than the younger generation.
That's an interesting point to consider Ok, yes, older people in the States and usually everywhere tend towards being socially conservative, but in the generation below, and the one below that, there will be those who end up having similar views when they reach that age and already have them so they just replace the current set, it's self-perpetuating and inherited. Maybe over time in the States the people propping up the NRA etc will dwindle slightly but I don't see it as straightforward as the younger generations will just eventually drift away from guns there and gun culture completely decline
I cannot fathom people rationalizing sandy hook or las Vegas irrespective of age. I can say on California the people I met were of a certain demographic and while they all hated trump publically they were all mad into security and cctv for their home and would spend all lunch talking about their home security. they must all fear for their safety in USA generally i guess.... now been west coast, east cost, southish and mid west.

Current generation of high school and University students are very Western European in their outlook. Even the millennials are perhaps closer to Europeans politically than the older generations. Now will they skew to the right as they age? Probably. Younger Americans are more global than older ones, I think they see more on the internet from other countries and are seeing how messed up things like gun laws are and crave some of the same protections people in the EU have, etc.
In many ways it is... Yes. Politics is definitely broken here. Health care system is a disaster. Gun laws are ridiculous. Yeah... US is messed up in many ways. Although so is Britain. Petty Crime rampant. Rich people and royals can get super injunctions. People of hereditary titles having political powers. Certain types of consentual porn being illegal. All sorts of people having ready access to your internet history. Cameras everywhere you're always being watched. You can be arrested for just saying something politically insensitive about a minority. The police can fine you without a trial. (Could probably come up with a list of crappy things about most countries... America it's easier because it gets more news coverage) All countries are messed up in someway. If someone can point to a perfect country, I'll move there.
Utopia is supposed to be a nice place according to Sir Thomas More, but I think the idea went to his head!
