I said 'one of', and they are the worst in my life time. Walcott----Parker----Barry----Downing or Beckham----Scholes----Gerrard----Barmby Barmby was a quality player back then, although the only player i'd replace. If we had Young playing left mid then I think we would have been much stronger in Japan and Korea.
I thought on the whole, we played well against a fairly terrible opposition. I too thought downing was average, and smalling a bit rusty (i know hes not a fullback). its also refreshing not to see lampard or gerrard playing for once. And in response to it being the worst midfield, its not the best on the paper, but its better than lampard and gerrard getting in each others way. the names arent as big, but it was effective. Also Barmby didnt go to Korea, if memory serves, that was when scholes got played on the left, and had enough of being played out of position.
I was just responding to this: I just think it's a little unfair to say it's the worst midfield ever, which is what this implied, that's all.
I have to say I think that both are very good midfields. Also, when Wilshere is fit he can replace Barry. I rate the likes of Downing, Parker and Young very highly. The next crop of McEachran and Cleverley will only enhance the midfield. I think we can be reasonably positive about the future.
Yeah I don't quite get why Smalling played? I understand it's good to get him experience and stuff, but he's only playing at RB at Man Utd as fill in, I wouldn't select him over a 'proper' right back like Micah Richards?
yeah, i think capello has a problem with micah. glen johnsons problems are well known, and micah has been the only regular english rightback for years, that isn't terrible, but he has hardly got a look in. if not micah, surely kyle walker over an inexperienced centre-back playing out of position; even if he has played there twice for manyoo. Or is walker injured? i think capello got the front line right tho. downing, rooney and young could be the start of a good thing.
Our midfield lacks flair, especially without Wilshere in it. Our wingers are also very direct, I think we need a Lallana-type to grab the game by the balls and bring others into play. Hopefully there are some good players coming through and we can play a part n that.
I'm pretty sure he was injured alongside Gerrard. We were left with a midfield of Beckham----Scholes----Butt----Sinclair Sinclair was the weak link in that side, had we had young, we would have been a top, top side.
I believe you've read that, not how I intended it. It's not the worst midfield i've ever seen, but it is the worst England midfield. Basically it is the weakest midfield since '94.
Walker was recovering from a virus that kept him out the spuds game. The problem with micah is he get caught out of position, he also throws in the odd miss timed red card awarding tackle. I think england would look better with young on the left, dropping downing. Have roney drop just behind the front man. So he can hold it up and dictate play. Then have bent or someone else up front.
