Sounds like a slam dunk penalty? Cynically, and in line with Cosi's remark above, even if it's dubious I think they'll give it.

Hamilton on pole, Vettel at best 4th means that Hamilton can lead home a comfortable 1-2 for Mercedes and win the championship. F1 gets to make a big deal out of the podium, smiles all round.

If Mercedes feel they have to manipulate the result to win it, it sours F1 in the US again. A grid penalty here probably all but alleviates that risk.

Vettel should comfortable get 3rd here though given Red Bulls Renault PU?

It’s whether he can get in front of Bottas I guess?

Cracking circuit is this, and a crying shame that the PU differences are still so big 4 years down the line into Hybrid F1. There could be some GREAT racing here.

Personally, I think a handful of great tracks should be visited twice per year.

Austin would be one of them, along with:

    Spa
    Monza
    Silverstone

Oh well, roll on the Tilkedromes <yawn>

    I wouldn't mind a couple of Baku's a year. Didn't see than coming a few years ago!

This isn't Vettels first red flag incident, I'm sure a few years back he again didn't think red flags applied to him so gunned it back to the pits overtaking a Manor on the way. Canada?

His excuse of 'having a look around is pretty weak.

If red flags are out you do as instructed, not decide yourself whether the situation determines how much and when you slow down.

I've gone for Kimi this time . I hope he just does his own thing for the next few races and , by skill or good luck , gets at least one more victory .

Hamilton will be wdc , and I really want to see something different happen to make it interesting for the last few races.

Seen the comments, Hammy will win and not gift to Bottas but after his championship he will be the Bottas support driver and will need to continue to concentrate to help win the Constructors.

Vettel, could it get any worse? his errors are worthy of a legacy from a pay driver. No one can call him great after the fiasco of the last 2 seasons. A wet Qualy will not help him.

Is Lewis going to match Michael's 7?

We would all welcome something different for the last races, I want Daniel to beat Verstappen in the last of the races this season. Don't think his team will allow that. I no longer believe in Horners integrity when questioned.

The fact Horner failed to praise Renault after the 4 championships , but was quick to throw them under the bus when things went wrong , says a lot about him as a person .

Indeed, threats to quit the sport because they were not winning, quickly blaming Renault in public, not nice, not teamwork, not many things.

Ferrari looking strong in the dry fp3. Shame about that 3 place grid drop hey. Typical!

Channel Four don't really know what to do with themselves because Hamilton isn't quickest.

"Obviously Mercedes haven't shown us their true pace yet". Hmmm...

Well that was close. Hamilton earning his money today. Shame a certain someone was naughty yesterday and ruined the closeness.

Hamilton doesn't like track limits ran wide twice on he's fastest lap.

Real shame Vettel blew it on Friday. Looks like it would have been a fun race. Can't see Kimi putting up much fight.

Nice to see Ferrari have recovered the pace they've been missing the past two weekends though.

Kimi was almost animated in the grid interview.
