Mansell's overtake of Berger in 1990 at Mexico will never be beaten.

    Best overtake of all time.

Mansell overtaking Prost out of the tunnel at Monaco, '91. That's the best ever... but outside of the Peraltada, that was pretty special! :)

Lauda in the saem tier as Hunt? Do me a favour, the only reason he was champ is because Lauda nearly got burned to death. That crash took a lot out of him imo, Pre 76 Nurburgring Lauda was defo tier 1, even came out of retirement and beat Prost in the same equipment.

Alonso's view on his top 5, including Hamilton:

    https://www.gpfans.com/en/articles/3030/hamilton-in-top-five-f1-drivers-ever-alonso/

Asked to name his top five F1 champions, Alonso said: "Michael, Fangio, [Ayrton] Senna, [Alain] Prost, Lewis – probably this will be the top five that comes to my mind.

"It's difficult to compare different times and different ways to win those championships.

"Lewis winning five now and being the same as Fangio is a great achievement.

"If one had to do that in our generation I'm happy that it's Lewis because he showed the talent and he showed the commitment.

"When the car was dominating, he delivered and won the championship. When the car was not good enough to win the championship he still put in some performances to show his talent. That's difficult to see in our days."

Fun fact, Alan Jones and James Hunt are the only F1 WDCs to have never been team-mates with another WDC. The closest they both came actually involves the other, in which they drove the same chassis for different teams.

6 of the 33 have never been teammates with another WDC for a full season:
Hakkinen - Senna (3 races), Mansell (2 races)
    Scheckter - Hulme (4 races)
    P.Hill - Hawthorn (2 races)
Andretti - G.Hill (2 races), Rindt (1 race), Mansell (2 races), K.Rosberg (1 race). Also drove the same car as Stewart in 5 races in 1970 but for a different team.

Another random fact: France 1996 was the last Grand Prix in which no current WDC was competing. 46 races in total have been run with no WDC on the grid.

The most to ever be on the grid was 6, which happened several times in 2012. Vettel, Raikkonen, Schumacher, Hamilton, Button, Alonso. Rosberg also on the grid.

I was wondering why that is true as Schumacher was around but his engine blew on the warm up. Nice fact.

What about Frentzen? Sure he never challenged for a WDC, but MS apparently had a clause in his contract saying they could never hire him because he feared his ability.

I wonder who the best drivers never to win a WDC really are.

HHF is a very interesting choice , and I agree with you .

He went to Williams , a team famous for how hard it treats it's drivers . They knew he had the talent . IIRC Sir Patrick said when HH moved to Jordan , I wonder if they can unlock his talent .

Jordan treated their drivers with care etc , HH FLEW there !

Everywhere MS went , the teams bowed to his every demand . Wonder how he would have done if he had started at Williams ….

Whilst we’re on the subject of who Michael could have driven for, and I’m sure some of you will have seen it previously- here is Ron Dennis having an ‘informal chat’ with a young Michael Schumacher circa 1993-1994 (I think)

Ron obviously recognised his speed early on.

I have to try to see things differently now I’m older as when I was a kid Damon Hill was my driver, so Michaels collision with him (and later Villeneuve) made it hard to fully like him. Some of his defeats or actions in close title races-v Hill, Villeneuve and Alonso made me wonder if he was as good as his record suggests. As did his number 1 driver clause. The Benettons suspicious traction control starts also tainted him a little that year.

Having said that, he was a rain master, and quite possibly the man who moved F1 drivers to the 21st century in terms of fitness and dedication. Ruthlessly quick over one lap too. And it’s probably fair to say he did drag some lesser Ferrari’s around in 97.98.99 prior to the later dominance.

I’ve seen some good interviews with Nigel Mansell and Eddie Irivine both who recognised Schumacher was going to be a force very early on. In fact Eddie Irvine said there were two drivers champions in his era- Michael Schumacher and Adrian Newey. And I think that says an awful lot.
