That's debatable and can never be known for sure. After the war the Japanese claim that Russia entering the war was a bigger influence on them surrendering than the bomb. The war might have ended without an invasion of the main islands needed... In which case many tens of thousands died that needn't. Before Russia joined, Japan had hoped that Russia might push for a solution that involved Japan not giving a complete surrender.
It was dropped simply because of the damage the Japanese suicide pilots were doing to the US Pacific naval force.. We are talking 1945 here, the Russians joined the war in 1941 when operation 'Barberossa' was launched by the Germans. The Japanese fiery activity was from 1942 onwards, so so much for the Russian activity by entering the war, made Japan take a step back..
Although it's hard to believe I just think that someone somewhere would have let the cat out of the bag given its nigh on 50 years since it happened!
Is that because you think it was real or because you reckon anyone who could tell the world is still scared of the repercussions? It happened the year before I was born so am always interested in the views of people who may remember it.
Russia didn't declare war on Japan until a few weeks before the end of the war in Asia. Their joining the war is believed to be the primary reason for Japan's surrender. Japan was slowly losing against mainly American and some allied troops in the Pacific. Europe and Russia were focused more on Germany until Germany was defeated. Russia joining in the war against Japan meant there was no hope it could possibly end well for Japan.
