Skidmark on the game and I'm pretty sure he was overrated.

He was a nob head of a human being but he wasn't overrated. If you were up against it defensively you would want him next to you

Don't subscribe to the "he was a class player". He was a very good PL player but no more, in fact no Bobby Moore.

Agreed. I can't believe pundits were in this guys arsehole his entire career.

His positioning was decent, his heading was decent, his tackling was either an assault or brilliant, but he was never the best defender Chelsea had on their books at any point in his career. Not even close.

He was part of one of the best defensive records of all time... Can't take that away from the scumbleweasel, but he was at fault for some hilarious goals because he had the pace of a striken, no legged turtle, and let's face it a lot of the defensive record Chelsea had was because they parked the bus with the world's most expensively assembled side.

He can't be put in the same bracket as Rio Ferdinand for talent, never mind a legend of the game like Maldini or someone.

I think you have to give him a bit more credit but I can understand the reluctance as he comes across as a boorish arsehole.

His organisation skills and ability to lead the side was top notch. He was as good as any for that. The best defender they had in his time was Carvalho though. Guy was electric and absolutely brutal.

Anyway as good as Maldini was, he wasn't even the best defender in the side until the greatest defender of all time retired in 1997. Step forward Franco Baresi.
