The Pope said he couldn’t support gay marriage without a mandate. If he’s that bothered I’ll go out with him.
I’m sorry but I don’t agree that it is a reasonable request for 185 people. I would think it reasonable if a person with a serious nut allergy was allocated either an isolated seat, or a seat on a perimeter (back corner, for example) and a few people near them advised of the situation. The case you mention above was down to the one person being ignorant. Should the airport have had signs up saying “please don’t open any nuts today as there is someone with an allergy in the building?” Where is the line drawn? If someone knows of their allergy then I think there should be some responsibility on then to take extra precaution, say wearing a mask for example if they are entering a public area like a plane. It could be walking through a supermarket, sitting on a bus or a train/Tube. It isn’t nice for these people, but I would expect them to have taken as much precaution as possible, including use of Epi pennas mentioned above. This may sound harsh, but what comes next?
I’m probably going to be seen as difficult or heartless on this, or dismissing the seriousness of the allergy; I’m not. I just was taken a back by the announcement.
The problem with planes is the recirculated air which makes avoiding allergens difficult, though I do get the point that the affected person is the one who needs to take most care. I'm surprised that the parents of the little girl aren't concerned about her being exposed....I think after that fright I'd take all my holidays in the UK. Foreign holidays are nice, but not an essential to life...though you wouldn't guess it nowadays.
I’ve just realised something here too. My flight was delayed over an hour and I sat there and ate a bag of peanut M&Ms while I was waiting near the departure gate (the announcement was made on the plane). What would have happened if I had been sat next to the allergy sufferer and perhaps touched the arm rest of their seat or handled their seat belt whilst getting into my seat? It’s a minefield!
The situation on a plane is different because the air is recirculated fairly quickly through a confined space, so it’s not at all the same as being in a large area like an airport or any other building. Nut allergies are quite common but only a very few people are as sensitive as the girl in the report, or, presumably, the person on your plane. Personally, I’d be quite happy to comply with a request like this, otherwise you’re expecting people who suffer from a condition through no fault of their own to live an unnecessarily restricted life.
Allergies have been around for ever....animals suffer as well as humans, but they seem more common now. Is this a case of recognising them better, being exposed to more artificial antigens or just people surviving who would have died in the past....after all being under the weather in the African savannah or Artic is more problematic than in 21st century Europe. One suggestion is that children need exposing to more dirt....because living in an unnaturally clean environment does not kick start their immune system. There is some evidence that living with a dog (but not a cat) reduces the incidence of allergy. Not having red hair is also a good idea And of course some people are not allergic at all, but just decide to be....because they have to have something to worry about. Anaphylaxis is the body's extreme response to an allergen....and is thankfully quite rare....though can hit without warning when someone is exposed to an allergen they are sensitive to but do not encounter in normal life eg anaesthetic or medicines (notably antibiotics).
https://news.sky.com/story/waitrose-to-trial-unpacking-shopping-as-part-of-home-delivery-11517493 Waitrose trialling an unpacking service for shopping. My comments: would have to keep kitchen and fridge clean before I'd let a stranger inspect them; not sure about letting a stranger case the joint; and 'fulfilment centre'....would that be a warehouse!!! I'm against the idea purely on the grounds that some twenty or thirty year old numpty has called a warehouse a 'fulfilment centre'. Sounds like a brothel.
I’m not expecting that Chilcs. I just don’t think it’s practical in public situations and my original thought of “where does this stop” is still what I think.
When young and into her twenties, my wife was a regular sufferer of tonsillitis, which was always treated with antibiotics. Then on one occasion the GP tried a different type (Septrin) resulting in an allergic reaction involving a lot of swelling to various parts of the body. Fortunately those were the days when a phone call could get a home visit and the doctor was round quite sharpish. The obvious concern that the swelling could have spread into the throat and constricted the airways. I can understand why a passenger flight would request tolerance and restraint from the passengers.
No need to be so disparaging Fran. After all, that numpty has probably got an MBA in Giving Things Stupid Names.
As I say, I don’t think it’s either feasible or necessary in most situations, but aeroplanes are by their very nature a special case, as there is a finite amount of pressurised air being redistributed around a small space very quickly. That’s an ideal environment for an allergen to get from one place to another in no time at all. So I would think (and expect) that where it stops is with aeroplanes.
I think the moral of the story here is don't let your 2 year old child near a shredder. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-45758102
https://news.sky.com/story/banksy-p...-destructs-after-1m-sale-at-sothebys-11518809 Just after being sold a Banksy painting self-destructed....the frame was believed to contain a remote-controlled shredder. Performance art I guess.
Tbf, it seems to be more for her sister who is still in many ways like a child in that she is very dependent on other people, like she doesn't do anything for herself. Cook, do the washing up, the laundry, even make her own lunches.. It winds me up no end. She pretty much expects everyone to wait on her, and the thing is, everyone panders to her. And regarding her parents, it's like she needs to see them pretty regularly, like a couple of times a week at least. In fairness when my gf's dad stayed on Monday night, that was to take my gf to an interview on Tuesday and on Thursday night it was to collect my gf's car (she hasn't passed her license yet so would have needed a driver...Saying that apparently they didn't collect the car til the evening so I'm not sure why it was necessary for him to stay on Thursday night but there we go...).And tonight her mother's staying over again, I have no idea if there's any particular reason. Probably not... I suspect one of them will be staying over tomorrow night to. In fact, I'd put money on it. But at least during the NFL season on a Sunday at 6pm I can go upstairs, put my computer on and watch 5 or so hours of American football while trying to pretend I live a normal adult life. My gf, she is great. The baggage she comes with, really not...
