They inspired their countrys to great success. Something Messi cant do and Maradonnas Argie were far less talented than Messi's is. Theyve got loads of good players. Dont tell me Mascherano and Pastore arent amazing midfielders for example.

Maradona won the 1986 World Cup single-handedly, as part of a team that was full of **** individuals.

Football is tactically advanced now. Teams have learned how to limit the amount of damage one single player can do. At the start of the Copa, they tired to play Messi in the same role he does for Barca. Problem is when he drops deep for Argentina he does not have players that he can link up with. Pastore and Banega where both massive let downs. Those quick one touch play could not be repeated like he is used to at Barca. Messi in the 2007 Copa was stunning. But that was when Riquelme was at his peak. And Messi enjoyed playing next to him. Messi can be stopped when he plays for his country because the midfield he plays behind are poor and can't find the same understanding he has with the players at Barca. Even Fabregas has found a connection with Messi in an instant. Unless the midfield improves then he is going to be tied down. Even then i would argue that Messi has been better for his country then Rooney has for England for about 3 years.

Riquelme, Veron, D'Allesandro and Cambiasso world class? Not having that tbh.

Those three where class acts for their country. Riquelme was clearly world class for both club and country while Veron was a bit of a let for his clubs and Cambiasso peaked late and was one of the best DM in 2010.

So Maradona played Defense and GK as well? Didn't realize that, thanks for the update, all this time I thought he was playing in a advanced and free AM role!

Riquelme was different gravy, Veron was awesome until the United incident, D'allesandro and Aimar were big let downs for thier country and at many times for their clubs, although I thought Aimar was incredible but didn't seem to make the jump to the upper tier of players.

At Barca he is loved, adored and celebrated, in Argentina he is ridiculed and blamed for their lack of success.

Barca are arguably one of the best sides ever, they train together every day and know each others game inside out, they are managed by a well respected coach who is a career Barca man that lives and breathes the club, whilst Argentina, since WC2006(where, IMO, they were the best Footballing team there) are a lopsided team that gets together every six weeks or so being led by a series of shambolic coaches, most notably the great Diego and have a Nation that have huge expectations regardless of the state of the management and playing staff. So Messi bears the brunt of their frustrations.

Why is International Football regarded as the highest level when clearly it is not?The Champions league is of a much higher quality.

Anyone who disputes Messi`s quality as a player needs to find another Sport to watch.

Mascherano is not a player that can link up with Messi in the attacking part of the pitch. The guy has been moved to the back 3/4 at Barca because of that. Pastore has failed to impress for his country. Was dropped after a few games in the Copa.

Hmm, Utd 99 were a good team and we had some excellent talent like Bowyer, Woodgate and Kewell pushing through but I'd have said the Revie team of '73 would be a more likely Utd candidate for best club team of all time. <ok>

Riquelme is 33 now, and he's done **** all in his career bar a couple of good seasons with Villareal. World class players do more in their careers than have a couple of decent seasons. Riquelme was a gifted player who didn't make the most of his talents.

Your absolutely right there, this thread is a complete face palm. Amazed no one has hinted on Rooney being the best player in the world....
