Deliberately so, because he unquestionably played on the wing at times and in a free role at times, the question is what do you think he was best known for?
The poll is split right down the middle so far, which does surprise me, but I guess that's how we've ended up here in the first place.
He started on the wing but definitely ended up playing where he wanted for us and centre mid for real. I've had to go for free role, but it's a difficult one.
It's a bit difficult to answer when you put it like that. Technically his role was 50/50 between winger and free and most Liverpool fans will know that so the question for Liverpool fans will be where did he play best? The answer to that is in a free role. I think you can ask the 'best known' question to fans of other teams as they won't have the same depth of knowledge about him as Liverpool fans do who will remember all his games not just the best ones. Other fans will have more memories of just the games that stood out for them. The poll being split doesn't surprise me tbh if non-Liverpool fans have voted. My vote would be one in each box, keeping it a split vote
We got into this mess because I feel our wingers are not effective, we have nothing on the left and we're struggling for goals. The manager is hellbent on playing five across the middle of the park, we only have one fit forward, so I said we should play the one player who can run at defences in a McManaman role and it turns out that's not as clear cut in people's minds as I expected it to be.
He was always pushed onto the wing with England. He was on the right under Venables (Anderson on left). I recall him being on the left a lot too
This used to drive me nuts, especially since I don't recall him being a particular good crosser of the ball. It was typical English football, oh he's a bit tricky must put him on the wing.
I always associate him with being a winger... and that time he did the 'knock the ball past and run around the other side' against Celtic and then the Solo goal against Celtic (he liked playing against Celtic didn't he)
The squad is so thin up front that Paul Hurst has been on the phone to free agents this week so you never know.
I can’t say I remember him a huge amount, was only 10 when he left lfc but I always thought of him as a winger. However I probably didn’t know as much as positions and see as much football as would do now so
well lfc didn't play with wingers. he was clearly right winger in 1992 fa cup final.under souness. he played central behind two strikers under Evans... virtually like Gerrard position under rafa. for England...well they were different. in 1996 he was left wing back under venebles. for real he was on bench coming in
I thought most would say free role but the split clearly shows one thing... He wasn't best known for either role!
Up until Klopp that was my favourite Liverpool side of the last 30-odd years. Not as solid at the back but for entertainment value they were better to watch than the sides Gerrard captained.
