    I've spent 5 mins typing and deleting now. Worried I'm gonna come across as xenophobic or something. All I can say is I'm glad Turkey didn't get it in the same way I'm angry Qatar got/paid for, the World Cup.

    Is it comparable? It's an ugly regime over there but I don't think there's any suggestion of any attempted corruption or anything.

    I'm not saying Qatar buying the WC is why I'm angry. It's their human rights abuses that irk.

    And I'm not saying Turkey tried to buy the Euros. Again, I'm referring to their human rights records...

    https://www.amnesty.org/en/countries/europe-and-central-asia/turkey/report-turkey/

    Countries like this should not be awarded any major sporting events.

    So I'm glad Turkey lucked out.

    Fair enough.

    Like most large countries, it will have nice areas and not so nice areas. Some of the tourist parts on the Mediterranean coast are fantastic.

    To quote Auf Wiedersehen, Pet:

    Oz: "How can the Turks be the Irish of Europe yer duck egg? When Turkey's not even in Europe. It's in Asia, man!"

    Moxey: "Oh aye? So how come they sing in the Eurovision Song Contest then?"

    Oz: "Well so does Israel, don't they? And they're even farther out of Europe than Turkey!"

    <cheers>

    Lucked out is an Americanism that means the opposite of what you think it means, in this case Germany lucked out. ;)

    That's a bit intolerant. Different cultures have different ways of going about things. Football is inclusive of all and exclusive of none. It brings people together.

    Shouting and stamping different ideas to silence and marginalizing them isn't progressive, it's regressive.

    I didn't watch any of this years World Cup for this very reason. It felt at times like i was cutting my nose off to spite my face but i do ultimately think it was the right thing to do.
