Barbara Fall, 35, was employed as a maternity support worker at Burnley General Teaching Hospital in June 2016. She was promoted to midwife but failed to pass a transition period because she couldn't communicate with patients and was demoted. Mrs Fall resigned and then took her bosses to a tribunal, complaining of constructive dismissal - but her case was panned by a Nursing & Midwifery Council panel which banned her from working as a midwife for 12 months. If Mrs Fall improves her English to an acceptable level in this time, she will be allowed to work again. Critics have slammed the NHS for wasting taxpayers' money on training someone who can't talk to patients. Conservative MP Phil Davies told the Sunday Express: 'It is a complete farce. The fact the tribunal hearing had to be conducted in Polish says everything about the case. 'It has been a colossal waste of taxpayers' money and shows how crucial it is to have a robust English language test. Anyone who cannot pass it should not be working in the NHS.' MP Andrew Bridgen added: 'The lesson to learn is that people working in the NHS should pass the English test before we start investing in further training.' please log in to view this image East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust said in a statement: 'Patient safety is, and always will be, our priority. 'A good command of the English language is essential for safe, personal and effective care. In this case, the person never worked here unsupervised as a midwife. She carried out the role of a support worker while she sought to improve her English.'
I guess if you are a Labour supporter than you would want a GE...problem is bob we had one and the Tory term is not finished. It's just an excuse for Labour to try and get into power ( god forbid). I heard the Labour bloke today saying we must respect the vote on 5 occasions and then said if people want a vote then okay? Idiot. Labour don't have a clue on this and should never be trusted in Brexit negotiations.
Interesting response mate. I've no clue as to whether Labour would do any worse or better than the cock up by the Tories.
Crucial cabinet meeting today. May will be arguing for Chequers. Hammond for a very weak, Norway option. Majority for Canada plus, plus. Canada for me, but it'll be interesting. Could possibly see some resignations
What a lot of ****e This is exactly what is wrong with your standard Brexiteer They honestly believe after this sham we still have a bargaining chip When will you try and understand the downsides of a No Deal ... just for one minute please it’s not project fear or any other hyped up words this is serious ****e You look very foolish to just offer hope Turning this into a fight or conflict is not the way to go. You like me are British try and at least understand all you have is words and blind hope
It's a pity that neither party has yet been able to figure out what they actually want from Brexit. The disappointing thing about it all is that anything decided today will be undone immediately by politicians pursuing their own agendas and disowning what has been agreed forgetting that they signed up to it barely 5 minutes earlier. Then we will all despair when we come up short in the negotiations because the Europeans are not convinced, rightly so, what the British position is.
The EU have offered a Norway or a Canada type with a bespoke trade deal. If we went for the latter, we would at least be on stronger ground with them. Seems to me that's the way to go to avoid WTO next March. I doubt the EU will relent on Chequers unless the hole in their budget from not getting £39bn on WTO causes an insurmountable problem for them. I'd love to be fly on the wall in the Cabinet meeting this afternoon.
It won’t matter who is PM nothing will change the divide or blame culture **** knows what Ellers will be moaning at next April I say again the U.K. required a massive culture change ... everyone is fed and overdosed by the media who are the real tossers in all of this Total media reform required just so the political parties are no longer slaves to them Being a U.K. politician currently requires being a top **** anyway but a top **** that is frightened must be the worse sort ? Blame culture is one evil nasty thing as it allows people to avoid any responsibility at the drop of a hat ... it’s everywhere everyday It’s contaminates the mind look at this thread with people just eating up the dross in the press and then posting it . It’s becomes an obsession very quickly imo
Rubbish again the use of the word Mafia Outside the U.K. it’s laughable how this thing is twisted. The U.K. is leaving no problem but will do so having lost a lot ... no idea where to begin on how much this has cost the taxpayer . We signed up and helped write the rule book and people forget that when it suits them we are no victims here but yet Brexiteers on here daily dream **** up We are leaving we know that now get on pay the bill and at least think about post Brexit and have at least one idea to propose What will have to happen is the Remainers will have to rebuild the country from London all over again while the rest of the U.K. moans about the costs when they all cut in
Still no clarity from Labour about its position regarding a 'People's Vote' on the EU. McDonnell says they would support it if they can't get a GE, but that it should just be on whatever deal May comes back with - Deal or No Deal. Starmer, however, says that nothing is off the table - leaving open the possibility of a Remain option on the ballot. If the party position was to truly follow the wishes of its membership, No Brexit must remain on option. Meanwhile McDonnell's speech on the economy, which will probably get less attention, focused on re-nationalisation and an interesting idea to give employees a stake in the companies they work for. A Labour party which is no longer scared to describe itself as Socialist. Good stuff.
Is that share thing for quoted companies or all companies? Lots of companies have employee share ownership schemes where everyone can buy shares with untaxed income and, if they keep the shares for five years, pay no tax when they sell them. Many have shares as part of their reward packages. Mine (ok it’s American) has just given all employees who don’t get shares as part of their package about £2ks worth of shares each. Did McDonnell say how this will work for multinationals employing lots of Brits but with HQs outside the UK and not quoted on The FTSE? Having just read a bit more this is a tax. Workers won’t actually own the shares, they can’t trade them, they will just be paid dividends on up to £500 worth of shares. For my company, a generous dividend payer, this would amount to about £13 a year on current shares prices. The government would get most of the money.
I read it as actual dividend payments of up to £500 per annum, not dividends on £500 worth of shares. I think you're right in that it's also a tax on larger companies (those with over 250 employees), but that's what I want a Labour government to do - tax and spend.
DT you really are sounding weird. I couldn't even bother to read your first post after the opening line. Sorry fella but you use my name too much in other posts. Get back to your walnut plantation and stop worrying about us here.
I heard, I may have to pay an extra £1.50 to take my dog to France. or even have to wait 4 months ...woof woof. This is becoming so funny I could laugh, As if the EU would put all these stupid rules into action. People would stop holiday in France and after 5 minutes they would surrender. Don't let the project fear worry you bob.
Oh I must have missed that bit when I was reading it. Do you reckon it's those Tory ****ers bullshitting?
I'm think it's more a case of the UK losing these benefits of being a member, rather than the EU putting rules in to action, or am I wrong?
Without doubt bob. The Tories are now doing project fear to scare us even more. Think about it...If Labour got in we would be well and truly f222ed
