On the other hand it does allow the chant of "Who's the assistant bastard in the black"

...which is probably why they change officials' kit colour every season

Who's the assistant bastard in the black" ? Much easier to chant Who's the linesman in the black/yellow/orange/puce/mauve/baby pink/blushing brown

Isn't it to make it gender neutral? Sian Massey's not a man, for example.

So she is a lineswoman it's not difficult. It's unnecessary meddling with titles and names, we seem to have taken this from the USA as we have with so much bullshit. The use of initials for example it just causes problems and reduces clarity. It's also very 1984 don't fix a problem just change the name of it. It's bullshit PNP and should be challenged not justified.

There is no problem bar the name, though. I don't see it as being an issue and everyone still calls them linos anyway.

I remember being in a pub discussion about people's favourite football chants and stuff that you no longer hear. A mad, funny and lovely bloke who passed tragically young said.....

    "I really miss "Linesman, linesman, You're a ****!"

He was right. Somehow, it was so much better than "The referee's a ****er."

And there you have it so the renaming causing different people to use different names which can lead to further confusion. Step out of the football bubble and people will be confused by the multiple use of names. There is no problem bar the name you say. EXACTLY!

If you're talking of people outside of the game, then assistant referee is far more descriptive than linesman.
People with no knowledge of football would instantly understand what that job is.

No they wouldn't the job of an Assistant referee is to police the the touch line he/she's not there to write letters for the referee of bring him cups of tea or handle his phone calls. He is there to run up and down the line and keep his/her eyes open.

Rugby calls them "touch judges" .
Their primary role is obvious, and no gender is implied.

Their secondary role (assisting the ref in decision making) can
also be explained to the unknowing.

Blind **** if you look at the allbomerang goal v Everton. There were two offsides and the goal stood.

Not sure how the linesman didn't see it, but we also had two very legitimate penalty shouts that weren't given when the referee had a perfect view of both incidents.

I'm not saying that legislates for the offside goal because it obviously doesn't. But we didn't exactly have every decision go in our favour.

And yet The FA keep insisting that the Premier League doesn't need VAR - mainly because their blue-eyed boys from Merseyside keep benefiting from not having it...

Brendan's doing a great job. Celtic are 6th.
Most of the teams ahead of them would struggle to beat Accrington or Gillingham.

Remember back in the summer how we were hearing it was a matter of time before he was offered a major Premier League job?

Also of note: I give it three days before 101 Great Goals see Hearts topping the SPL table and publish an article slagging us off for not signing Sean Clare from Wednesday in the summer...

In other news, a round of applause for Villa's social media team
