Ok... To balance out my negative footballer comments on the PSG thread... The good guy XI.

XI footballers I've admired over the years for various Reasons. The good guys, and the role models of football. Not necessarily the best.

    Attack
    Mane - Crouch - Kuyt

Mane has always come across as so humble. Always seems to work hard when the others are having a bad day. His attitude at being replaced by Salah as our creative outlet has been admirable. He quietly goes about being awesome humbly and without fanfair.

Crouch... He's just Mr. Good. Always comes across as a stand-up guy.

Kuyt. He's run through a brickwall that has been set on fire and covered with acid... And snakes.

    Midfield
    Henderson - Lucas - Milner

Hendo and Milner are both really hard working and non-ceasing workhorses. Real do the work and not complain players.

Lucas is really the star of the team. As much as he was berated early on he worked so hard to turn things around and was loyal to the end. He worked hard to go from scape goat to hero.

    Defence
    Riise - Agger - Carragher - TAA

I'm not sure I'm happy about my full back choices here. I struggled to find a really admirable LB, but I always liked Riise so went with him. Never one to back down from a challenge and always a good performer. Not sure if he is a good guy or not... But I liked him...

On the other side TAA has impressed me so far. His rapid rise hasn't seemed to give him an attitude or arrogance. He keeps trying even when he messes up.

For centre backs I don't think it really needs much explanation. Carragher, never injured. Never complaining. Always just a stand up guy loyal to the club. Ok... A certain YouTube video may have hurt his reputation a little, but you can't help but admire him otherwise.

Agger was likewise hard working and completely loyal to the club. I was sad to see him go.

    Goalkeeper
    Karius

Yeah... I know, probably our worst first team goalkeeper of the last decade or so. He gets the most here though because of his humility, general repentance and not striking back at the horrendous things said to him.

    Subs
    A few other mentions:
Bellamy. A true philanthropist and seems to be a genuinely caring and good guy despite being a bit rough around the edges at first impression. Ultumately he misses out on first team because of his attack on Riise with the golf club.

Salah. Despite being a genuine world class player is very humble and down to earth.

Gerrard. Mr. Liverpool misses out because of a couple of drives and punching a DJ. No doubt loyal to the club though.

Finan. A good loyal general who always gave his all.

Hamann. He played with a broken toe.

    finnan for RB?

heres no way bellamy should be near it. he's a hateful individual.

Aurelio could be LB as he was a "nice guy"?

GK? hmmmm... i think you ought to check out a bit of karius social media before believing the humble stuff. If he has to have played for us then finding a keep is next to impossible. Dudek might be a shoiut.

Full backs and goalkeeper were hardest pick for me. They're less often in the news and whereas vital for a team, full backs often aren't involved in many of the showy moves in a game.

I used to feel the same way about Bellamy and understand he's a controversial pick. He's rough around the edges. Very gobby and coarse... Yet at the same time seems to have a very genuine heart and soft spot for people under privileged and who have had a rough life.

I started off not liking Bellamy but over time there were several stories about him that changed my opinion.

Regarding Aurelio, he was also not picky about where he was played... He would gladly do a job and give all effort anywhere he was placed.

Bellamy on and off the pitch are 2 diff people. As you say he seems like a decent enough bloke and I think he matured in his spell with us towards the end of his career.

    True.

That's why the twats out there should be forced to endure the same ****e wages we get <laugh>

Plenty of players out there who would run through a brick wall for you. About time the ass holes got punished :bandit:

    GK Chris Kirkland
ST Torres - we let him down imho, and I will never forget the day he passed instead of being the one who killed our title dreams.

they felt much more like "us" they might not catch the bus to the match but they would be around in the normal community and would need to work when their career ended.
Mind you there was still the same percentage of twats as in the wider world <laugh>

    1. Unlucky that Shilton was around at the same time. Never got the level of praise he really deserved.

    2. Top Man. Got a picture of him kissing Big Ears signed to me on my wall.

Reina. Loyal to a tee and not a squeak of dissent. Also won the Golden Glove three times, at a time when Van der Sar and Cech only had one each.

Joey Jones. Always seemed the quiet guy of that classic squad.

Maxi. Got his own song. What more can you ask of a freebie?

Went to a sportsman's dinner back when Clemence played for us, he was standing in the foyer afterwards signing autographs and posing for pics, it was a week after his total **** up against Boro when he let a weak shot go through his legs at his near post.
He'd had a few sherbets and seemed to be having good banter with the lads talking to him.
I said(jokingly) "have you been practicing keeping your legs closed this week Ray", the lads saw the funny side but Clemence called the bouncers over and got me thrown out.<laugh>

Still, I forgive him and I know he hasn't been well, so all the best Ray.<ok>
