Hungary protects its own borders, not the EU’s Frontex – Prime Minister Viktor Orban

“There is no need for Frontex to protect the Hungarian border in our place,” Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in Salzburg on Thursday. The cabinet minister later said that the proposal that Hungary objects to has been sent back.
Arriving at a summit of European Union leaders, Orban told journalists that the European Commission has put forward a proposal saying that “if there’s trouble”, national competencies should be “taken away from member states” and border protection should be managed by the EU.
Orban said he had presented Hungary’s proposal on Wednesday to Austria which would “resolve this problem” by allowing member states to retain their right to protect their borders. The same proposal has already been presented to Bulgaria, he noted.
The prime minister called Frontex, the EU’s border agency, a “nice idea”, but said the agency had “never successfully protected a single metre of a border, while we have protected hundreds of kilometres”.
“There’s no need for them to protect the Hungarian border in our place, not to mention the questions of principle concerning the issue of sovereignty,” he said.
Orban said this was the stance he would represent at the summit, adding that “there are more of us who oppose” the EC’s proposal. “The status quo is on our side for now.”

Listening to the fallout from Salzburg it seems like a major **** up from all parties, but especially the EU. When confronted by a weak and nearly friendless at home Theresa May they needed to give her options that saved at least a vestige her her dignity rather than humiliate her further, as all the comments and the childish pictures from Tusk have done. They don’t seem to understand that, given the stubborn and bloody minded British character, they have made a walk away much easier. Even I am beginning to think ‘**** this for a game of soldiers’. It’s pointless endlessly saying ‘everyone wants a deal’ and then making no effort to get one.

The UK negotiating strategy has been weak, obviously, but it has been matched by the EU who seem to have simply sat there and waited for the UK to propose whatever the EU wants, letting the pressure build. They never understood that there is very little intelligence behind our approach, but more importantly that the specific political circumstances in the UK are much more complicated than they think, and now they have made them much harder and burned whatever trust there was remaining.

I hope the Irish recognise that if they do end up with a hard border again it’s not all our fault.

Agree with every word of that.
As you say, our Government have been inept since day one, although they have been hampered by rabid remainers within the civil service imo.
This led to Davis being seriously undermined at every turn.
A strong leader would have quashed this, but May (a strong remainer) has been about as useless as it's possible to be.
However, it has been clear to me that the EU have wanted to punish us from the outset, for having the temerity to dare to leave.
As you say, they should know better than to rile the British with their put downs. The way our prime minister was treated yesterday was a total disgrace and it could back fire on Tusk and his cronies.
I know a few people who voted remain who are now saying '**** this attitude from the EU'.
We should tell them that we are now on course to revert to WTO trading regs and that they won't get a penny more from us after 29th March and if they want to talk again, the door is always open.
It truly now is time to tell them to **** off!

That's a great post, Stan. I think too, that May needs to look at her UK civil servant advisors, particularly Ollie Robbins, who appears to have advised her that Salzburg would be a walk in the park and all the EU leaders rallying to support her.

Tusk's mocking tweet was designed to humiliate May, and through her, the UK. Macron's speech makes clear he wants to punish the UK for leaving. Add to that, we have EU leaders telling us to have another referendum. Those leaders (not the countries they represent) really do look increasingly like a bunch of gangsters and we will be well out from under their malign influences.

    Bloody hell Sb, top post!
Agree with all these posts today. EU is being disrespectful and mocking us. If they continue to act like they are, they will push us too far. Even Farage said a few days ago that if the EU do not treat us with respect our bloody-mindedness would kick in (and for all of people who dislike Farage, he has been spot on). This is already happening. Yesterday the radio was full of people who said they voted remain but due to the way the EU has treated us would vote leave in the future. This was even confirmed by the Tory MP last night on QT

Tusk Joke just sums up the people we are dealing with? Macron should keep his mouth shut and worry about why he is less popular than Trump. I didn't realise just how much the French dislike him. He will be gone next election
    As for the Irish..
The Irish should do more because that is one country that would sink without us. They need to speak up.

Finally, I have just listened to John Redwood (my MP and family friend) who has just made Sky 'remain' News look stupid yet again. The presenter tried the project fear approach about planes not flying after the deadline. he said "what rubbish you can buy Lufthansa tickets for after that date. Do you think they won't honour those tickets"? The presenter went very quiet.
He said they are going to tell TM to drop the Chequers plan as it's dead. He also said 'keep the money' and use it on the country after we leave.
    Spot on.

New polling suggests that Labour could gain 1.5 million votes by backing a new EU referendum. Just saying.

At least now it looks like it wouldn't need to be multiple choice. It would be No Deal v No Brexit.

Did the poll also suggest how many votes Labour would lose ?
    Genuine question.
