    However having to play 4 competitive matches (including a UEFA Cup Final) in the last 8 days of the season due to pointless postponements of fixtures, and despite SPL extending the season to assist them, it proved just too great much of a self created problem for Rangers to overcome.

    Rangers should be careful not to operate with a smoke and mirrors policy. It was their inability to beat Hibernian and, more notably, Partick Thistle in Scottish Cup ties at the first time of asking that prompted replays. It is fortunate for Walter Smith and his players that the SFA changed the rules and abolished Scottish Cup semi-final replays, otherwise Sunday's draw with St Johnstone would have intensified the headache.

    And then there was Rangers' decision to ask, and be granted, a postponement for a match against Gretna in December, the weekend before a Champions League game against Lyon. It was a crazy decision at the time, and subsequently took up another midweek in January.
