Has anybody else noticed how good Chris Hughton was in the market?

Here are the signings he made while in charge:

Danny Simpson - £500k (Did a great job for us in the Chamionship and is OK now, definetly a good squad player)

Zurab Khizanishvilli - Loan (Did well for a few games that we needed him, remember he played a good part in one of our goals - not sure which one)

Marlon Harewood - Loan (Was **** but scored about 5 goals in 10 games - so not bad and he helped win us some games)

Fabrice Pancrate - Free (Great start and amazing goal against Watford, was a trier but was not quite up to being retained for the Premier League)

Wayne Routledge - £1.5m (Was one of the main reasons why we started banging them in in the Championship, added great width and balance)

Mike Williamson - £1m (Did excellent for us in the Chamionship and last season - great player to have when needed)

Fitz Hall - Loan (Never let the team down when he played, also has a great name :) haha)

Patrick Van Aanholt - Loan (Was great and I know that a lot of people wouldn't mind seeing him return one day)

Leon Best - £1m (Slow start but he has started to become a lot of peoples first choice striker with a good goal record in the Premier League)

James Perch - £1m (Only player who he has signed who is **** - maybe Colin Calderwood had a big influence on that deal)

Dan Gosling - Free (Just started to play and even though not done much yet, has great potential)

Sol Campbell - Free (He was a good signing at the time and did well when he came in for the odd game, when he played a few in a row he was dreadful)

Cheik Tiote - £3.5m (Hughton said he watched him play for Anderlecht while he was Keegan's assistant and recommended him to Keegan then, Carr seems to get credit for this deal but Hughton was main man for me! Tiote is a sensational player)

Hatem Ben Arfa - £5m (Potentially world class playmaker, still can't believe we captured him - will be great when he returns to fitness)

So overall he did brilliant and if he was still our manager now I believe we would be more than satisfied with the business done this summer (I know we are now but I think he would have got us a striker, left footed left back and centre back in)

I know there is no point looking back but Hughton is a great man and I wish him all the luck in the world - pity we couldn't draw Birmingham in the cup :()

Hughton was hit and miss in the transfer market. A couple of good signings overshadow the other crap he brought in.

    This
a lot of those players were Championship class and in fairness that was all we really needed in the championship. Thing was as we were the biggest club that might want them it wouldn't have been to hard to get them
Ben Arfa, Tiote, Best and Gosling though i'll happily praise him for though <ok>

I have to say Pardew's not been doing too badly himself (assuming he actually has any say whatsoever)

Cabaye for £4.3m, Santon for another £5m, Ba on a free!

Hughton's signings were good on the whole, but a couple (especially Routledge and Perch) have been found wanting more recently.

To be fair with the resources he was given he did a fantastic job, without him we'd be struggling in the Championship like we were 20 years ago.

This. He got us the players we need in Champ and got us players we needed to to the job last season - think he would have got more highly rated players this year

When we signed Sol Campbell the majority thought it was going to be a good signing

When he came in for the odd game he did OK but then he had a run of games in which he was awful

I know people thought he was gonna be good but that's hardly the agenda for a good signing and he was ****e in every game!

Haha, he did OK against Man City away when he came on. I remember him pushing Adebayor off the ball. Also Chelsea at home I think he did OK :)

Bit harsh, when we drew with Chelsea he was as solid as a rock.

    THEN, he turned ****.

I thought Carr had been watching Tiote for a few years?

Yeah he had - Hughton also watched him a while back while watching another player and told Keegan about him - nothing happened at that time. So, I guess it was a mixture of both Hughton/Carr who got the little legend here :)

How come the manager has no say in transfers when it goes badly, yet takes all the credit when it goes well?

agreed. One thing however is I don't think that either CH or AP can deserve much credit for signings under the current regime. Believe that Graham Carr and others conduct the majority of the transfer business? Pls correct me if I am wrong!

Have heard that CH was desperate to sign Sol Campbell and we know what went wrong there so perhaps he is not so great on that front!
