At least Victorian prisons were punatative. I understand modern prisions are more like hotels.

Having never been targeted for a brutal sodomising in the showers when I've stayed at a Holiday Inn, I have to ask what hotels you've been staying in so I know to not book with them...

Mostly African hotels, many of which you'd be lucky to find a shower, or at least water in the shower anyhow. Things like you talk about can happen anywhere, in prison or on the outside, that's life, nasty but true.

My issue with prisons is that people are quite happy to return to prison after serving a sentence. Conversely, in countries where prison is actually a punishment, i.e. Rwanda, Eritrea, crime is almost non-existent. In Rwanda, prisoners work 12 hours per day, hard labour, building roads, breaking rocks etc., 365 days per year, no parole. No work means no food. In Eritrea, prison means bread and water, barely enough to keep the prisoner alive. Any other food has to be sent in by relatives. In both countries, very few people ever return to prison after serving a sentence. Punishment works.

I think some men, elderly perhaps, just go to prison to be looked after with free board and lodging and meals thrown in! Don't they make them work to pay for trheir keep.If not...why not?

On my way to a dental appointment earlier I picked up a copy of yesterday's Standard, and buried deep in the paper and almost thrown away was a tiny boxout regarding a sudden call for various Tory MPs to be deselected.

What's interesting is the clear contrast with the recent Labour deselections: in Labour's case the local parties had a no confidence vote for the likes of Frank Field, Kate Hoey, Joan Ryan and Gavin Shuker, and in the cases of Field and Ryan there's years of the local parties being at loggerheads with them on various issues. What the Standard says about the Tories, though, is that the local parties of pro-Remain MPs such as Nikki Morgan are receiving calls from above asking them just how happy they are that their MP isn't supporting the greater good of a Hard Britait.

That's a democratic way of looking at things, isn't it?

  7. The CrossRail 12 month delay will bring a significant additional loss of budgeted future revenue for TfL.

This will come as an additional blow to the company struggling with the removal of the central government operating grant - effectively a loss of almost £1bn - at the same time as dealing with an economy on hold pending the Brexit outcome.

So, who do the Government and particularly the lovely Evening Standard blame for the capitals transport woes? Of course - Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Yep, let's blame the guy who inherited this situation and had no control over the Exchequer's funding decision in 2015. Khan may be far from perfect, but his only major impact on the financial situation of TfL was to hold to his election promise of not raising fares. Despicable man!!

Perhaps it would be better to shift the blame to good ol' George Osborne, the Chancellor who is now......... the current editor of the Evening Standard!! Just a thought......<doh>

Sadly because of the rightward swing of the middle ground, the "proper" Tories of the mid 70s might be considered left of the political spectrum if they surfaced today!

The thing with professional contrarians like the failed gameshow contestant or Milo Yiannopoulos is there has to come a point where they hear of some tragedy and end up looking at themselves in the mirror and sighing, because they realise all their life has come down to is them posting something so utterly ****ish on Twitter to please their ignorant ****wit followers like some teenage edgelord
