The Beeb is now reporting that the two Russian suspects were arrested and then deported earlier this year in the Netherlands for allegedly spying on a Swiss chemical weapons laboratory.

If we’re supposed to have a joined up security system in Europe why were they subsequently allowed into the UK?

Geography may not be my strongest subject, but what was a Swiss chemical weapons lab doing in the Netherlands? Having a smoke and a waffle on holiday?

Seems to be some argument about this weeks big public health push, getting people like me - middle aged, highly regular (daily) drinkers who rarely get **** faced - to lay off the booze for two days a week. I’ve given it a go (though the wife can’t face it, she does have to live with me, deserves all the anaesthetic she can get) as I’ve noticed the daily consumption creeping up from two to three glasses of wine with dinner recently. Had nowt on Tuesday and yesterday. Net result we are opening the second bottle tonight. Not sure if this is the intended effect.

I’ve managed to kick the ***s (but not the nicotine) and adopt a healthy diet, but booze is really lovely. I’ll keep on this couple of days off regime for as long as I can.

The argument was about whether any public health initiative can work with the involvement of the industry which is causing the alleged ‘problem’. A few public health professionals have resigned over this latest stuff. Public heath is really important, but public health consultants (not real doctors, they don’t have patients) are an odd bunch.

What you put inside your body has consequences ask Boy George

Alcohol and Rec Drugs of any type imo is not good for you
I love it when Mrs DT ’partays’ because the next morning the bill arrives and I love to watch her pay up
Sons are the same a bit of smoke and 40 little French beers ... the next morning it’s like being in the film 28 days later

This new health initiative is probably the only one I can remember that I can enthusiastically support. My wife and I adopted a Monday to Wednesday booze embargo long ago, so our livers are fully prepared for the Thursday to Sunday binge. That is what they mean isn't it?

I think so. I did it pretty well a couple of years ago for a few months, but slipped back. I need the wife to buy in, but she works much harder than me, enjoys a glass of something chilled rapidly on getting home.

  16. It's very odd and invokes John Le Carre, Graham Greene and all the others. It's really hard to believe these things happen. My mind was made up early on - the EU, Macron, Merkel, Trudeau etc were never going to expel a load of Russian diplomats on the strength of something written on the back of a *** packet. This is real all right - and it's terrifying.

  17. I've given up even trying to be healthy. I did a 50km walk last week in 7hrs 23 minutes which probably makes me the fastest 48 year old chain smoking alcoholic in London. The experts can put that in their pipes and smoke it!

  19. I don't think I could run a marathon - can walk for miles but would be lucky to last just one mile running <laugh>

Have to say that, imo, anyone drinking 2-3 glasses of wine EVERY night is verging on being an alcoholic.
