Hmm, good for Sauber, presumably still good for Kimi's wallet too.

Bit of added pressure for Vettel. Just what he needs!

It’s the right call- Kimi has been good for F1 but we needed a new driver at Ferrari. The real shame is that they haven’t stuck Ricciardo in with Vettel but at least it’s something.

Be interesting to see if they miss Kimis input to setup etc.

It does go against Vettels wishes- are we seeing the beginning of some problems for Sebastian at Ferrari?

He could still get the second seat at Sauber, Ericsson isn't confirmed yet, and he doesn't have the same level of senior management support as before. So it's hard to say whether that means Kimi is taking the "Ferrari seat" currently occupied by Leclerc, or whether he's taking Ericsson's "management seat". Ferrari are apparently trying to loosen their involvement in Sauber however.

I do wonder if Kimi to Sauber and possibly a part owner is a was for Ferrari to have MORE control over Sauber without the FIA being able to say ferrari are in control of Sauber! There seems to be quite a bit of talk about 'slave' teams and 'standard' parts and the use of smaller teams 'extra' budget from the cap being used by 'master' teams to circumvent the budget caps.

I think the FIA and commercial rights holders need to do something quick. Before we know it we will only have 3 'real' teams and others who simply make up the numbers. This isn't the way forward. We need good teams that can challenge each race. We don't want 3 teams way out in front as it wont make good racing or make F1 more popular. I can see lots of shell companies being created to do some 'clever' accounting to avoid the budget caps. Reallocation of prize money might help but it's the information that the PU Manufacturers have that is making a significant difference.
I hate to say it but Bernie was doing a great job and he may have been right about the PU. Not because of noise etc but because since the introduction of the hybrid pu's realistically 1 or 2 teams have a massive advantage over the rest of the field. Much as I love the PU technology and the amazing power they are achieving I am thinking that going back to V8 would help the 'rest' of the teams.

F1 needs to go back to basics to make the cars simpler to build and run.

No independent manufacturer can now afford to build and develop the powertrains required to compete in F1. We'll never see the likes of Judd, Cosworth, Ilmor, Hart etc in F1 again. None of these types of companies have the resources to do F1, without the backing of a large manufacturer which defeats the whole object of trying to get away from them.

There are 4 engines in F1, so it should be that there are at least 4 'works' teams who should be competing at the front. That is still far better than what would be seen in a normal F1 season if it actually happened. To think that the likes of Force India, Sauber, Haas etc could consistently be at the front is never going to happen.

The last time a truly independent team did this was Jordan, but they couldn't keep up and fell off into oblivion after a short time, ironically once Honda turned them into a works team.

Looks like channel 4 have secured a deal to show highlights of all 2019 F1 races plus Silverstone live.
While not perfect at least we can easily watch all races without paying silly money to sky.

I reckon looking at comments Toto made on sky.

If ocon does not get a race seat next year , he will be back with mercedes in 2020.

They seem to suggest only 3 seats available .

Haas , torro Rosso , and Williams.

    Haas = no Ferrari b team .

Torro Rosso = No because Merc refused to supply the engines ?

Williams , possibly but I imagine they will want dosh .

Real shame , but I bet he will be back .

Much more preferable to.that look at me Verleign ( sp )imho .

Toro Rosso only exist to develop drivers for Red Bull, they won't improve Ocon for a year to then see him in a Mercedes beating Red Bull the year after.

Anyone who ends up at Toro Rosso will have no connections to Ferrari, Renault or Mercedes.

Grosjean has consistency issues, but is fundamentally quick enough for Haas. They aren't going to toss him aside for Ocon, who might be gone in a year and leave Haas needing another driver. Haas will only make a change for long-term benefit.

Williams have one seat, but Mercedes need to get Russell an F1 seat too really. They might be able to fob him off into Super Formula for a season perhaps, but I wonder if the Red Bull program might come sniffing if they do that.

Mercedes at a corporate level are reluctant to commit to F1 on a 20 year timescale, and junior drivers are feeling that effect most keenly. Otherwise Mercedes could have tried to support Manor, and place drivers there.

Do you reckon Williams could afford Wehrlein and Kubica? That’s the sort of pairing they need.

Sirotkin is paying about 20m euros for his seat. Whilst supposedly Kubica has equivalent backing, I don't think replacing Sirotkin with Kubica would fill the gap in their finances. From recent comments Kubica has made, he doesn't think he has a shot at a race seat in 2019.

Wehrlein is no longer part of the Mercedes setup from the end of 2018. It maybe helps his chances of a Toro Rosso seat, but means he's surely got no chance of a Williams drive. They'll either want an engine discount from Mercedes for running Ocon or Russell, or somebody with deep pockets. Ocon seems to think he's sitting out 2019, I can't see a scenario where Wehrlein drives for Williams whilst Ocon sits out.

If this has a chance, I hope they go with Ocon and a discount . Surely they realise that 2 young pay drivers and a new dog of a car is a recipe for disaster ?

FWIW I think Stroll will be quick at his next team .

He has had his moments , but things seem to have gone badly wrong in the Stroll Williams relationship .

Maybe knowing they had designed a dud meant they may as well have had two pay drivers rather than forking out a salary on someone who may only have done slightly better. The cars flaws are that bad that a quicker driver would probably have more problems with the way it stalls the wings in corners!

Stroll was okay last year once he got a few races under his belt. Whilst he is clearly not Vettel/Hamilton/Alonso good, it will give us a chance to see what level he is really at.

That's true , but I got the impression they were not totally sure until the season got underway , then the fix made things worse ? Still would like to see Icon in there next season .

The BBC are saying that Williams are understood not to want a Mercedes contracted driver . Anybody got any ideas why ? Or do you think Williams are playing hard ball ?( to get more out of Merc)

I'm going for hardball. Williams are not financially comfortable, so whoever comes in needs to contribute. With discounts on engines Merc could potentially "pay" up to 20 million euros to place Ocon or Russell.

Kubica might be able to match that, but there's very few others out there who could. Surely nobody else offers money and the experience Williams desperately need?

I'd like to see Vandoorne stay in F1, but I think his Richard Mille money is only about £5m, and he doesn't have a lot of experience to lead a team.

I like to think Hardball . Hope Ocon gets in , would like to see him sign a 2 year deal , do well for him and the team and just do one year then off to.merc for 2020 onwards .
Sadly I think the Kubica dream is over , he should have got a go this year , now I think it's to late .

Regarding vandoorne , ****ty time to try and prove yourself .

Sure i read / heard his manager said 100% he would have a drive next year .
