A question for those here who have stopped drinking in the past...

Did any of you have issues with having long and uninterrupted sleep?

I'm not having problems getting to sleep in itself, but seem to wake up at about 6am every morning without fail and can't seem to break the habit. It's almost like that now I'm feeling the effects of sleeping more that 3/4 hours is enough for me no matter what, as no matter what time of day it is if get woken after 3+ hours of sleep I won't be able to go back to sleep at all.

Can tell you that 3-4hrs is not enough for you. You should be getting at least 6hrs. It may be that the alcohol had affected your sleep pattern. You need to try melatonin just before you go to sleep. Trouble is re-establishing sleep patterns is difficult when you work varying shifts I would think.

Yeah I usually aim for 6-8hrs but not getting anywhere near that at the moment, it's definitely drink related as I feel like I get a lot out of my 3/4 hours rather than sleeping for 8 or so and still being tired all day. And yeah no chance of a regular sleep pattern for me, not at the moment anyway.

    Melatonin?

Never tried it myself - just watch highlights from Newcastle's last game which has the same effect.

You could try some of the herbal remedies like nightall to make you sleep better.

Getting to sleep in itself isn't a major issue, it's the waking up early/ not being able to stay up asleep that's a bit of a ****.

Don't get me wrong it's not a huge problem and I can deal with it but just thought there's a few ex drinkers on here who might have experience of similar.

Are the blinds the issue? You're constantly running your brain. When I used to do shift work I kept the curtains open and slept. I had less trouble than most transitioning out of nights.

I don't think this will be drinking related as you'd have more trouble sleeping when you've had a drink, dehydratiin, needing to go for a piss etc.

I'll try it today as there's no sun out... see what time I wake up and if can fall back asleep.

Though nights not best time to judge it really I suppose.

Perhaps this is your bodies normal pattern without the alcohol? Try to get back to sleep and get your body into that new pattern.

Yeah maybe. I was always better than my other shift members, getting up earlier and being less tired and I swore by it being me sleeping in the light.

I’ve been off it for almost 5 months now, the sleep problem shouldn’t last more than a month or so. After that, you should get your normal sleep pattern back.

I suspect the problem in your case is more the shift work than the booze.

Quite possibly? I've never been an early riser before but I'm up early when I've got my boy so it might just be creeping in generally and I'm noticing it more now.
