Anyone seen the furore surrounding Serena Williams - systematically abused an umpire for 5 minutes after receiving coaching and being punished by the umpire (coaching which has been admitted to by her coach) She then smashed a racquet and got penalised then went on a 5 minute tirade abusing the umpire - she got punished with a 1 game penalty and said it was because she was a woman (sure there's been racist connotations too!! https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/45461716 This woman is an embarrassment!
She's getting a lot of support from serious people in the game though Marcus. There's more to this than first meets the eye.
Aye Billie Jean King jumped straight on the bandwagon!! I can;t see how it's "because she's a woman" - the tirade she gave the umpire (who get's around £400 for officiating - around 2 seconds of her work/pay) she deserves everything she gets mate. I listened to it - she was coached (i.e. she cheated as it's against the rules - this has been admitted by her coach) she DID smash her racquet (again something which is punished with point violation in every level of the game) and she spent 5 minutes having a go at the umpire. If my kids went on like that they'd be severely punished. Besides - while she was doing this - who was washing the dishes??
Every punishment she had was by the book so she hasn't got a leg to stand on and neither have her supporters. You can't have a meltdown at the umpire for doing their job correctly. She's just angry because she can see her career going south as she gets older.
It's my understanding that the code violations that the ref gave her where correct, therefore can't see what he's done wrong . Williams issue is that the men get away with far more serious stuff than the women. If the ref us a 'sexist then she should have the evidence that said ref treats male players different. If not then she's made a complete arse of herself and using her 'superstar' persona to get away with it. Not wishing to sound sexist but she's a dick
I don't understand why he's being referred to as a 'she' Naomi Osaka won her first Grand Slam tournament, and the spoilt, attention seeking bastard took the glory away from her . . . . the selfish twat Ban him for life, I say
There's part of her interview where she says (literally) "Other men don''t..." I wondered about that!! Sad reality is that the first bloke who holds his hand up to challenge a line judges call will get a one game penalty!
I think the BBC article sums up quite succinctly what her 'sexism' argument is about. I wouldn't know whether she's right about a man not being penalised in the same way for the same offence. She does come across as a bad loser though and it's poor form from one of the legends of the game to behave in that way and leave her opponent in tears because of her unpleasant behaviour.
Can the umpire not sue her for defamation of character? She got what she deserved apparently. So what if he supposedly punished her more severely than usual. Could have had many reasons for doing so. He may have had a barney with his wife that morning, he may have been suffering from a really bad hangover. What Serena Williams cant assume is that it was because he is sexist. There might or might not be statistical evidence that women players are reprimanded more harshly and more often than men. But she cant accuse the umpire of sexism in this one off occasion. Outrageous! Cant believe some people are backing her. The umpire could have been well within his rights to walk off.
Absolutely ****y behaviour which took the gloss off that poor girl's big day. ****ing brat who believes her own legend.
She was an absolute disgrace and should be forced to apologise to that umpire before she is allowed back on a tennis court..
And yet only a few days ago a male player, one who has show an attitude problem throughout his career, was barely going through the motions when a different ref got down off his high chair, (in every sense), and did the coaches job himself, jollying him along so well that he went on to win the match, much to the annoyance of the opponent. As football Fans we ask, (but rarely get), that there is consistency in the way the ref's apply the rules. As I see it the Lady is merely asking for the same thing. It's worth pointing out that a former multi Grand Slam winning male player has made a good living since he retired from playing, based on his notorious fights with referees. So she may just be a bit smarter than many give her credit for!!
I agree with the consistency comment in your post. However, she has absolutely no right to call the referee sexist.
She had three violations in the same game which, according to the rules, is a 1 game penalty. 2 warnings and on the third (which the referee could comfortably have given long before he did) she was penalised a game. She is claiming that men don't get penalised for calling the umpire a thief. When, in reality, her punishment was due to breaking the rules of the game (coaching/smashed racquet/umpire abuse and threatening - "You will never be on another court of MINE as long as you live" directly to the umpire) If a male participant had broken 3 rules in the same match, he'd likely get the same punishment. Whereas if a male player called the umpire a thief as his forst or second offence, he wouldn't be punished with a loss of a game. No sexism at all - just utter stupidity from an uptight player who thinks she's bigger than she is
Just think she's a big head and didn't like how the game was panning out and lost the plot. The umpire needs congratulating for not clocking her one, if she'd behaved like that on a night out somebody would have put her on her arse.
