So who what and when was the best band or singer you’ve seen live? I’m not a massive muso that’s been to festivals etc but have seen some good bands. Best performance I’ve ever witnessed and he is probably my favourite musician was Richard Ashcroft. Loved him when he was in the verve and then as a solo artist.. went to see him last year at the O2 in brum. Every song he did was on a or if not better than the recorded versions.
Great topic but almost impossible to nail down one particular band/artist. Most memorable (music content only) would be Earth, Wind & Fire as a support band for Santana at Hammersmith. Pink Floyd at Earls Court, Neil Young & Bruce Springsteen at Hyde Park, Rory Gallagher at the Roundhouse, Fleetwood Mac at the Bull east Sheen plus many many more.
Led Zeppelin Knebworth 1979 Pink Floyd - various times Who - Charlton 1976 Rolling Stones - various times Bowie - as Ziggy, and as Thin White Duke, and other times. Live Aid 1985 Live 8 2005 I love live music and have been lucky enough to see most of the top bands perform.
Yeah hard to pin it down to one. I’d probably have to say it was The Fall at Brixton Academy in around 92-93. I’ve also seen them play some utterly shambolic gigs, so they were always hit and miss. Glad I got to see them perform to their best though as they were a brilliant band.
Oh yeah + 1 for the stones. Amazing energy on stage. I saw them at Wembley stadium though and tbh those stadium gigs are a bit ****ing massive. You’d have had to have been around in the 60’s though to have seen the stones at a small venue.
The Eagles at the old Wembley Stadium when they reunited. 130,000 people. Deep Purple back in the 70’s
Incubus, either a couple of days ago at Brixton or in 2007 at the BIC. Linkin Park 2007 Sheffield Arena Foo Fighters @ Glastonbury 2017 Oasis @ the Rose Bowl 2005
Johnny Thunder’s Heartbreakers at Southampton Top Rank in 1977, and Johnny Thunders solo at The Boston Arms in Tufnell Park, 1984, are two that stand out. You had to catch Johnny on a good night, because often he was too ****ed up on heroin to put on a show, but I got lucky twice; on his A game he was rock n roll incarnate. The Clash were always brilliant live. Lucinda Williams at Shepherds Bush O2 last year was pretty good. I still go to quite a few gigs; you can’t beat live music imo
The Smiths at Manchester Free Trade Hall 1986. Because it was them. Pixies at Glastonbury in 1989 were superb but the most memorable Glastonbury performance I ever saw were Primal Scream in 1992. Was incredible.
Saw Oasis near the end and a bit gutted I didn't see them in their prime but were still excellent. Not the best though. Best band live for me and the reason they're my favourite band, Manic Street Preachers. Seen them 15 times and absolutely awesome every time. Unfortunately I'm too young to have seen some of the greats mentioned already.
I saw Oasis in Sheffield, got to admit they were very good in concert. I didn't like them much by then though, always hated Liam Gallagher as he's everything I can't stand in a person and he does it as a Mancunian, as if we're all like him. They were on at Glastonbury one year I was there but i watched someone else instead.
Seen some great bands in Jamaica. The Abyssinians were probably the best live. Although Burning Spear were amazing too. Bounty Killer was also incredible live. Enjoyed Steel Pulse too. My favourite big gig was the 'Up in Smoke' tour in 2000 - Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Proof, Nate Dogg, Kurupt, D12, MC Ren, Westside Connection, Mel-Man, Tha Eastsidaz, Doggy’s Angels, Devin The Dude, Warren G, TQ, Truth Hurts and Xzibit.... all performing in one night. ****ing mad night, good times.
The Who anywhere, but Rockpalast in Essen probably the best. I usually prefer smaller venues. Bo Diddley at the 100 Club, Ten Years After at the Marquee Club in 1967, Stones and Yardbirds at the Crawdaddy and a charity gig in Sussex with Gary Brooker and Andy Fairweather-Low and Eric Clapton joined in for about an hour and a half stay in the memory.
Dire Straits at Queensferry Ice Rink - must have been 1982 or 1983. Whole rink was bouncing - mainly to avoid frostbite.
The most memorable live act I’ve seen was Diana Ross at Cipriani Wall Street at a black tie event. Incredible to see such a legend up close in such an intimate atmosphere.
