"In a very late move yesterday (Wednesday), Liverpool agreed to sell midfielder Raul Meireles to Chelsea for a fee thought to be £12million. The Portugese midfielder had handed in a transfer request last night in a bid to push his move through to Chelsea, the exact same thing that Fernando Torres did in the January transfer window." After being worried of having too many central midfielders for most of this transfer window, i was relitively pleased when i saw the likes of joe cole and Poulson leave the club. I had personally thought that then we should sell either aquilani or meirles but certainly not both so when the bid came in and his request granted i was devastated. Although Kenny had not started him in the last two games his performance from the bench v Arsenal enhanced his reputation and proved to me he is a quality player, like Torres. We have now sold 2 very good players in two transfer windows on the bounce and has made me question if we are a selling club? What are your thoughts?
Selling club? I think the holy trinity (Henry, Kenny, Comoli) have proven the last two transfer windows that that isn't the case. In that time we have strengthened in every position on the field. We may not have wanted to lose Fernando or Raul as fans- but I'm sure every fan to a man can't argue that we are stronger in those same positions now. Of course we have to sell if we're bringing people in or we'd end up with way too many people eventually.
I have no problem with selling players like Meireles, he was a good player, without being "TOP CLASS". He will/could easily be replaced in January. If he was top class I would have been annoyed but he isnt. The only downside of selling a not top class 28yo foreign player for £12m, was the fact it was so late,we couldnt get a suitable replacement
Jesus. Both handed in transfer requests. They had their heads turned by Chelsea, I would love to see both their faces if we finish above them and collect silveware and they don't.
in the end when you are not in the cl you find out what kind of guys some people are.... meireles joined us and then promplty lef twhen all and sundry could have told him hodgson was not up to it.
it was only a question lol. Arsenal are claimed to be a selling club, selling fabregas (WORLD CLASS) and Nasri (very good) and we sell Torres, who depite recent critisim and lack of form certainly was world class, and meirles a very good player. Keep the best players sell the ****, thats the way it should be but we have recently sold our better players, to a team (atm) better than us. I could soon suarez wanting to leave when a club like barca or possibly even man utd came in because nowadays we can't keep our best foreign players
I think Meireles wanted out and there is no point keeping a player who doesn't want to play for us. Same with Torres.
You were devastated to lose a lightweight squad player who gets injured and hardly completes 90 minutes? And then you say that you think we are a selling club? How silly can you get? "Selling clubs" don't splash out £100m+ on new players when they're offloading deadwood. Your views are to be respected, however they don't make sense. Everton is a selling club...
tbh i wasnt devastated but disappointed, but didnt want to use this word twice in the opening stanza. My point is more then, should we be selling our better players? and why do they want out?
My views are to be respected, having twice got onto BBC's live commentary with my views from twitter (alexwebster5 if you wish to follow, which i doubt many will after this poor thread) Please take this with a pinch of salt, its true but said in a jokey way
Some people are never happy... 7 signings, 6 of which are probably first team players (Doni being backup). Everyone is calling for the fringe players who are never going to be played are sold then they are to everyones relief and all of a sudden because we've sold one player who might get into our first team we are a selling club! All clubs sell, it's if you then don't bring anyone in to replace them that makes you a selling club (Everon with Arteta). We got Adam & Henderson in to replace Aqualani & Meireles.
Who knows exactly why they 'wanted out' money, instant champions league, ego at only now being on the bench... We can only speculate. I would however disagree that raul was one of our 'better' players now (although agreed he played well in certain matches last season. We have strengthened and now he was only good enough for the bench. We were all disappointed at first when Torres left, but we were wring to be so as in hindsight he's become rubbish and had been for a while... And Chelsea overpaid...
They weren't our better players when they were sold. Torres was pants for the last 6 months for us before we sold him - guess what? He's still pants now. Miereles was a slightly better than average player that is driven by money. I'm sure I read somewhere that he wasn't being paid that much. Well he's probably doubled his wages to go and sit on Chavskis bench because he certainly isn't good enough to be starting for them every game either. I smell a WUM.
Lets look at it, we made a profit on a player that: Has to be subbed after 70 minutes because his fitness levels are dreadful. He performed for 4 months of last season. It was the timing of the transfer request and not the transfer request itself that has left a sour taste. I just hope he has the same level of success at Chelsea as Torres and Benayoun.
