I know it's only the Sun newspaper but they are reporting we are considering sacking this guy as he turned up for training 72 days late.
Be pleased if we can sack him along with N'Dong would solve a lot of problems.

I would only if we are able to sue them both for their transfer fees.

If we sack them tomorrow they are worth nothing when in reality we're probably still paying for them in various installments.

At what point though would you rather bite the bullet and just pay their previous clubs only and not the players too?

Arguments sake we still owe probably half of their fees - that's £10m roughly?

    That's a large bullet.

If we dont sack them and they stay around for another year we would have paid them around £5m. For them doing sod all, plus we will still owe their former clubs. Its a pickle.

I mean, how much do you actually think they are worth now? We'll be lucky if we can get £5m combined wouldnt we?

After their behaviour no one will sign them other than a loan with us paying most of their wages. Only after they have proved their worth to the new club will they offer them a contract and if they are savvy they will run the co tracts down until January 2020 when they can sign pre contract deals and we don't get a penny.

A part of me wonders how much of this is agent driven. What with Maggie Byrne saying Honeyman didn't want to be here and Cattermole won't leave a penny behind. From the outside I look and think "I f I was that player, I'd work my arse off so a new club would want to pay me more - why is my agent telling me to go on strike? What will I gain from it?"

But, then again, as someone who is regularly working 14+ hour days (with no overtime or flexi) just to impress the management and directors in the organisation, maybe my mindset is different to these footballers and their agents!!

I've been of the view from the very beginning that its the agents driving this.

I think many of these players can't or won't fart without their agents say so first.

Agree. As I’ve said before , the FA really have to have a look and put some regulation / rule / restrictions or whatever in place , before non football people take the short term buck uncaringly destroying the game in the longer term

Absolutely right mate - but then Gordon Taylor sticks his nose in and the clubs end up getting the ****tiest end of the stick as always.

Got to remember this game is one of very few where the employees (players) are paid more than their managers!

Sunderland chairman Stewart Donald has updated supporters on the futures of wantaway duo Papy Djilobodji and Didier Ndong.Speaking to the Roker Rapport Podcast, Donald shed light on the reality of the situations surrounding the pair - who have both made it clear that they wish to leave the Stadium of Light following the club's relegation to League One.

Both Djilobodji and Ndong failed to report for pre-season training as they looked to force through a move, although the former did return to the Academy of Light this week.

And Donald confirmed that the defender's time away from the club had been agreed as he sought a move, but the expectation that he was fit upon his eventual return had not been met when he arrived back on Wearside on Tuesday.

Indeed, upon his return the defender is thought to have told manager Jack Ross that he doesn't feel as if he has done anything wrong during the protracted saga - and failed to take part in the club's training session.

"Papy has turned up this week but the reality of it is that we agreed with Papy specifically," said Donald.

"He requested not to return in July as he’s going to get a move to another club, we said that’s fine, we’ll have an agreement in place but obviously we’re not going to pay you if you’re not returning to training.

"Which he accepted. That was the situation for July but we said that you have to keep yourself in a certain condition.

"Papy returned, as I understand it he had a conversation with Jack Ross where he said he feels as if he hasn’t done anything wrong.

"He turned up and he had an obligation to turn up in a certain condition, he hasn’t turned up in the condition you would want.

"The following day, training would commence and he never made the training session."

Dider Ndong, meanwhile, is yet to return to training with his current whereabouts unknown.

That is no surprise to Donald, who believes that the midfielder has absolutely no desire to return to Sunderland.

MORE: Recap all the action from the Black Cats' entertaining draw with Fleetwood
The Black Cats are now exploring legal avenues concerning both Ndong and Djilobodji - with the chairman keen to fight the club's corner throughout.

"Didier Ndong has shown no interest in returning to Sunderland, so he’s not here," Donald added.

"The players are obviously being devalued as we speak because they are not playing football and if you’re trying to sell a footballer, you get less for them if they are not fit. It’s not our fault they are not fit, we didn’t ask them not to turn up, we didn’t ask them not to keep themselves in trim but they don’t want to be here.

"I don’t know in any industry, where by that is acceptable, where the employer should be expected to pay their wages and let them come back in. We don’t think that is our stance, we don’t think that is acceptable behaviour and to me that is gross misconduct.

"We are going through the legal process with that and we’ll have to fight our corner.

"I do not see morally in any way shape or form how the football club should spend one more pound on two footballers who have decided that because they do not want to play football for Sunderland in League One, that they are just not going to turn up.

"How is that not gross misconduct?"

Sunderland AFC:Club statement - Papy Djilobodji

Sunderland AFC has given notice under its contract with Papy Djilobodji. Djilobodji, who was under contract to SAFC until June 2020, indicated in June 2018 that he wished to leave the club.

In order to facilitate that desire, the club entered into a written agreement with the player allowing him to spend the month of July on voluntary unpaid leave.

When that period came to an end, the player was expected either to leave for a new club – having reached a deal satisfactory to himself and SAFC - or to return in shape to play professional football. Instead, he returned to Sunderland over a month later, in the first week of September, ignoring written requests for his return. On his return, he was subjected to the same fitness test that his fellow professionals had undertaken on their return. He comprehensively failed that test.

As a result, Sunderland AFC can confirm that it has accepted Papy Djilobodji’s repudiatory breaches of contract and notice of the same has been provided to the player.
