On paper, at the time, both understandable, even exciting signings for us. In a similar vein to earlier Man U signings. Brady and Chester worked out well. Evans less so. These 2 unfortunately just haven't worked out (although MAYBE all is not yet lost with Keane - "there's a player in there" as they say). If only crystal balls worked.
Tbh I disagree in Keane’s case. Originally United rated him, but he’d been out on loan a few times at lower levels and not done much and carried injuries along the way. We were in the prem with a threadbare squad, and he was never going to be the answer in that situation. Equally for weir, a kid with no first team experience, had no chance being thrown into a promoted team trying g to survive in the prem. Basically Ehab didn’t trust Phelan with any money so placated him with two kids and henriksen, who was probably a player scoured whilst Brice was in charge.
Probably the second definition. scour1 ˈskaʊə/ verb 1. clean or brighten the surface of (something) by rubbing it hard, typically with an abrasive or detergent. "she scoured the cooker" synonyms: scrub, rub, clean, wash, cleanse, wipe; More 2. (of livestock) suffer from diarrhoea. "he went out to deal with piglets who were scouring"
Keane and Weir were utter appalling signings for a team recently promoted to the premier league. If we'd signed them this summer, as a team looking to survive in the Champo you could understand it, but not back then, they were cheap as **** bollocks signings for a team with no ambition or hope.
I see that Bruce is looking at JT again as a free agent. How come we aren’t looking at that list. There must be the midfielder we are looking for. Experienced, good even for one season.
Because many of them are outside our wage bracket. Or Adkins doesn’t think they are good enough. There’ll be a semi decent reason they haven’t bothered, it’s been a while since we signed a free agent mid season.
But if i remember right, they were only 2 of several signings we made. In their cases, signed more for the future than for immediate impact. Just didnt work out. Doesnt mean they were stupid signings at the time. Weir had been captain througjh Man U's youth teams and Keane scored for fun for their academy. I thought we had pulled off a coup when we got Weir. Hey ho.
I guess the main reason will be money Sterling but we have never needed a bit of class and experience like we do now. A couple of injuries before Christmas and we will be in deep ****. (Or deeper **** depending on your view)
I am sure you are right Plum but not replacing the players we had in our midfield is one hell of a gamble. I still think we needed a Norwood type and maybe even a Cattermole. The lad Batty is doing great but the gamble Is immense.
