You mean commuters filling skills gaps? Of course no Hull folk work in East Yorks.

    Mine - no.

Oil rig-worked in North Sea (Rough field) back in the 80s.

Opposite for me. Mines in Canada & Norway in the late 60's, early 70's.
Loved the money, sneered at the location - not the countries, the working environment.

Too much like hard work. That is why commuters come in not only to do the skilled jobs but the ones so many don't want to do, hence the high unemployment figures in Hull.

My most enjoyable work years offshore. I imagine now it's all very serious, hyper-regulated, dull etc

    Yes, surprising isn't it?

This despite all the jobs the rt. hon, John Prescott managed to attract to Hull.

He is on Hull's Sexiest List. Which must be worrying for those who didn't make it.

Alan Johnson always seems to be smiling. Must be his multi-volumet autobiography doing that ?

Forgot to mention - BBC4 are repeating the 3-part documentary "Planet Oil: The Treasure that Conquered the World" as we speak. If you haven't seen it before - it's well done with a fair bit of footage of N.Sea rigs.
It'll be on BBC iPlayer for a while I expect.
