I imagine they'll be alright but 3 ties before the group stage is a lot. Was only two when we finished 7th in 2015.

Fabinho taking 'big steps' towards Liverpool debut

Fabinho's wait for his Liverpool debut is likely to end soon after the international break.

The Brazil international has yet to feature competitively for the Reds following his summer switch from AS Monaco, with Jürgen Klopp fielding an unnamed team in the first three matches and making just a single change at Leicester City on Saturday.

The strength in depth available to the manager has meant no place in the matchday squad for Fabinho since the opening-weekend win over West Ham United.

But the midfielder has made significant progress in training, according to Klopp, and will be needed when Liverpool tackle a difficult run of fixtures later this month.

“The team is good and he needs time,” the boss said after the 2-1 victory at the King Power Stadium extended his side’s 100 per cent start to the season.

“He could have been in the squad, of course, but it’s quite difficult to make the squad at the moment because they are all fit.

“It’s good to have the situation as one might need a bit of time, or the others are more used to it. That’s the only reason.

“But he will come back. And now we have games every three days, and he has made big steps in the last few weeks. He could even play at the moment.”

The No.3 has since joined up with his country, alongside Reds teammates Alisson Becker and Roberto Firmino, for matches against United States and El Salvador.

“Hopefully now Fabinho has games with Brazil, and then after he comes back we have games, games, games,” added Klopp.

“We have the whole of September a lot of games, only against top teams. We need all of the players, that’s good.

“We have come through the period where it looked like we didn’t need all of them because we played quite a consistent line-up and the level in training was high. That’s all cool. Hopefully they all come back healthy as we have to use them all because of the number of games.”

Premier League stats: Zaha, Milner, 100% starts and long waits
    Milner matches Beckham

Liverpool's unsung hero James Milner covered an exhausting 12.39km against Leicester on Saturday, at an average speed of 7.69 km/h - meaning he ran further and, on average, faster than anyone else on the pitch as Jurgen Klopp's men maintained their winning start.

In fact, only Bournemouth's Dan Gosling could match Milner's legs this weekend, the Cherries midfielder covering 12.57km as his side chased a result against Chelsea - though without any reward.

And Milner now ranks fourth among Premier League players for total distance covered so far this season, but would you have guessed who comes in at number one?

Tottenham's Christian Eriksen - running 49.56 km in all - lays claim to being the Premier League's very own Mo Farah after four games, ahead of Gosling, Chelsea's summer signing Jorginho, Milner and N'Golo Kante.

Not just an engine in Liverpool's midfield, however, Milner has now registered 80 Premier League assists after his corner was converted by Roberto Firmino - taking him level with Manchester United legend David Beckham.

Only six players have bettered that tally, but can you name the top 20 assist makers in the competition?

    I know that. <doh>
They've been in it, and that's why they've played so many games so far, and that may have contributed to their poor start to the season.
Which is why I said it'll be interesting to see how they recover.

Not being more than 3-0 at HT? Smicer's scuffed shot bobbling in? Dudek's double save? Shevchenko missing from a few yards? Gudjohnsen (sp) too? Penalties always require luck too.

We had plenty of luck in that game

Come off it. None of that is luck. We used our luck up getting to the final.

The only piece of luck, if you want to call it luck, was Smicer, who had a broken toe, playing on with it and managing to score.

Where did I say they were simply "lucky"?

    reading is hard mmkay :p
If it takes a bit of luck to win it once, and you often make your own luck.. then it takes 3 times as much to win it three times, maybe more, with the law of averages against you :p

All probability analysis would have weighed against them winning it three times, three years ago.
There is a good reason for that statistical outcome
