LEON BEST has indicated he has no fear about being handed the responsibility of leading the line for Newcastle United this season - and the Nottingham lad now feels that there is a void to be filled at St James' Park in the striker department.

United did not land the centre-forward that fans were expecting on deadline day, much to the deep disappointment of the Toon Army.

The Republic of Ireland international striker – who has hit eight Premier League goals in 10 top-flight starts for the club – bagged a brace in the 2-1 victory over Fulham.

And the emphasis now turns on to Best and frontline team-mates Shola Ameobi, Demba Ba, Peter Lovenkrands and young gun Sammy Ameobi, after the Magpies failed to fill the number 9 shirt and bring in a new centre-forward.

Best may have had his critics, but he feels that he and his team-mates will plough on. The in-form striker told the Chronicle: “That’s all you can do.

“If the manager gives me a chance I will take it.

“After the Fulham game I couldn’t wait for the next game against Queens Park Rangers, we just wish it was tomorrow.”

And speaking on a record that United fans will hope he can keep going, Best said: “I think if you want to go off my starts in the Premier League it is almost one goal every two games.

“That sounds very good but I want to add on that. I am obviously looking forward to the next few games. We are in the top six now so why shouldn’t we be as players?

“It’s been a great start for us.”

Best is hoping that he can get the start he wants against Queens Park Rangers in 11 days time when the Magpies face up to Joey Barton’s new side at Loftus Road.

He added: “Whenever the question is asked I will try to answer them with goals. I think that’s what I want to keep doing.

“I am giving the manager a headache by doing it. It’s a sweet feeling.

“I always look back to my first Premier League goals against West Ham, I didn’t think I’d get that feeling again. But it was there in the last game.

“I have had chances here and there but I need starts. Sometimes I have not been fully fit. But now I have my chance.”

    Good lad .. <ok>

Always spoke well, Best. Never moaned or anything.

I hate how everyone keeps putting Ameobi ahead of Ba when talking about strikers, as well <doh>

I've got an old Chronicle in which Shola says........" give me a run and I will show you I'm a 20 goal a year man"............blah, blah ,blah................

AP probably said, "Leon", put some ****e in the paper about you wanting the best chance etc etc"

It's called " LET THEM EAT CAKE"............keeping the peasants happy.

He's a canny lad, I'd love him to take his chance and become our starting striker.

Give him a go. If him and Ba can battle it out to the point of earning the number 9 I'll be delighted.

Yeah, I wish he'd come out and said "I'm gunna score about 6 goals this year, and even that depends on deflections" - that would have kept us all content!

I like Best - he gives 100%, decent finisher, is really quick but is a Championship striker end of! Don't think he will get us double figures....

If Best started every premiership game this season he would score at least 10, but probably somewhere between 12 and 15. His record in the Premiership for us is brilliant. People need to give this lad a break. I think some people are taking yesterday's frustration out on him.

I personally really think that Ba will start to come into form and get us some goals. Maybe I'm deluded? <whistle>

Liked Best ever since that West Ham game with the hattrick; think his goalscoring record speaks for itself; can't believe Pardew can let Shola just walk straight back into the team all the time.

Think our best bet this year MUST be Best/Ba until Ben Arfa gets back.

OK we'll see. I actually think he'll score between 12 - 15 goals. Just watch and see. #Stay positive.
