No knocking on doors SH! What a typical Tory response. Pay some money and expect others to put in the graft. Are you ashamed to meet the public and explain why they should vote for the local candidate?

The local Tory MP is always re-elected. There are plenty of foot soldiers. I'm more of the black tie event type.

One of my best friends wears a black tie a lot. Going to the funerals of his local lodge members.:emoticon-0105-wink:

There are not 'plenty' of foot soldiers SH. With so many oldies and immobiles in the party the numbers who actually canvass at election times are only about a third of all members. On the ground they are outnumbered by Labour by about 10 to 1 - this is why, whatever the polls say at the start of a campaign, Labour wins the ground campaign. This is why it is so imperative for them that the Tories hang onto control of the press.

My local MP will be re-elected without my involvement. There will be enough local foot soldiers to inflict yet another defeat on the socialists.

You have a lot of shocks coming SH. As a party member you are not only responsible for general elections, but local ones as well. When you get close to election time and you go to party meetings, it comes down to allocating roles, and areas. If you do not have enough members then you end up standing for a ward yourself. Bearing in mind that there is only one Tory Party member for every 700 population and the average electoral ward numbers around 5,500 I will leave you to do the maths. There are not the numbers for 'sleeping members', and as a completely new member you are not going to get the most pleasant jobs. Don't worry - it's fun climbing up lamp posts to make sure your posters can't be pulled down. Also - whilst canvassing, you get abused at least once daily.

My only involvement will be fund raising balls and posh garden parties. I will leave the rest to the minions.

You may not realise it yet, but that is exactly what you are, a minion in the party.

Well if you are comparing cabinet ministers to ordinary members that would be obvious. I'm just happy to do a little to keep the Tories in power.

I suspect I know rather more about Tory local associations than you do. :emoticon-0100-smile

Well done that chap, Cologne probably knows more than I do. All I know about is turning up at the odd fund raising event, that will not change.

It might surprise you but money is useful but nowhere near as important as status to the blue rinse brigade.

Hopefully they will wait three months before toppling May so I can join the majority of members in choosing the country's next Brexiteer Prime Minister.

No I have happily settled with my life and land and friends from around Europe and beyond. I unlike you have been able to enjoy my life, and feel no need to run back to England.
