My dog is now 8 months old and is turning into a bit of a ****. I think it is mainly down to exercise but the breeder I got him from told me that up to a year or so he shouldn't walk more than 7 minutes for his months of age as it can **** their joints up. So atm its 8x7 56 minutes a day. I probably give him more than that anyway but he just trots home completely fine and not tired then starts going nuts around the house.

Don't think training is the issue as he will still do all the stuff I have taught him (sit, stay, down etc) maybe he is just becoming a teenager or something and being a bell end.

Dogs will generally act like the family around them so if you're chilled they will be chilled.

Yeah the breeder's info is right, you don't want to overdo it when they are pups as it can knacker their joints etc. But I'd say that if your dog is still full of beans when you get home, then he probably needs longer walks. You don't have to let him chase round like a banshee on amphetamines, just walk him a bit further on the lead <ok>

Yeah that is what I am going to do, or just add in an extra 20 min walk or something each day. He is perfect off lead when I am out in an open space and will come back when called etc, but on the lead he is a bit of nightmare pulling a lot as he wants to just run. He is getting better though and I just need to keep working with him as I can't really let him walk off lead where I live as it is in the centre of a city.

I've read a fair amount online and the common answer to knacker them out is just to let them run off lead for about an hour a day, which I basically do anyway. Clearly I have just got some well high energy level version.

I saw a programme the other day about the rise of dog theft by illegal breeders. It was bloody awful and quite distressing. Especially for the owners.

2 big tips were never shout the name of your dog when it's off the lead, have another way of getting it to return to you, especially if it gets some distance from you and always chip your dog.

You are better off training to a strong visual recall, the command is important when starting out but use a visual as well from the start so like this...

The dog can see it from a distance and is more likely to respond to a visual when there is a lot of noise or if he is far away.

Actually I need some tips on dog training

My lads started to take the dog out n that. So I didn't need to

Lads were busy this week so I took him out an dhe nearly yanked me shoulders off. He is a powerful dog and pulls

I should have kept training him myself

Buy this. I worked with Joyce for a couple of years the advice is probably a bit dated but it is still solid sensible advice if you have a new dog, it's training but with a look into how they tick and why they do what they do.

You need to involve all the family in training so that everyone uses the same method and verbal/visual commands. If he pulls it can take some effort. Take a look at my last post, that book is useful in that you'll get an idea of what your dog is thinking when you do something.

Yeah saw the book after I posted :emoticon-0148-yes: . Will check it out

I'm not bad at the training having had dogs before. Am a big fan of Cesar Milan

The dog has "become" my 15 year olds somehow and so I tried to keep out of it outside the basic commands at home. Tbf at home the dog knows to listen to me

He needs to know you're the alpha.

Kick him in the nads or bite his ears. Whichever works best ;)

I would suggest you get together and make sure that you all train the dog and that everyone is consistent in the way the dog is treated and that everyone uses the same commands.

As long as you are happy with the way he behaves around everyone though you don't have a problem. Everyone is happy.
