Match Day Thread Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United

Discussion in 'Tottenham Hotspur' started by PleaseNotPoll, Aug 22, 2018.

  1. Sorry lads, and I really hope I'm wrong, but I cannot see anything positive from tonight's game.
Not only because ManUre have so much more to lose if they don't perform, but also the media are setting us up to fail..... Like Jamie Feckin' Redknapp saying we should win. <yikes>

Just have a vision of Pogba, Sanchez and Lukaku managing to get their **** together for one game - delaying the now inevitable departure of Moanarinho.

Feckin' hope I'm wrong and this proves to be an impressive act of RCL-like prediction <laugh>

Sometimes it's worth taking a step back and thinking about where we are compared to where we were. We are discussing here whether we should sit back and out defend Manchester United, or instead take the game to them and out attack Manchester United. Think about that, and how long it's been since we've had such an option. I speak as someone that attended the game where we got relegated to the second division! Sure we've always had a sprinkling of great players and done well in the occasional competition, but to be competitive in the current climate is frankly astounding. And this is where two of our closest competitors are sham clubs that have been completely reinvented in their current entities by very dodgy investment. We've done it the right way, and we play good football. For that I'm happy. Yet there appear to be some idiots who are continually readjusting their expectation as we have improved. Well that way lies madness because you simply will never be satisfied (we've seen a few of them complaining about the new stadium - you know the one we've had to pay for). So yes we could do better, but goodness we're in a good place. So constructive criticism yes, but relentless complaining get stuffed. And by get stuffed I mean all the words that you think I mean and more.

When you see how disjointed Utd's play is - lacking any understanding or cohesion - then there's no reason for Spurs fans to be anything other than confident.

Utd have won at home to the the top sides recently (apart from City, but won away) through a combination of de Gea's brilliance and exposing a weakness to either pace or power or both on the counter. Utd can't break down lesser teams who sit deep, but the better teams can be vulnerable to the counter attack when pushing forward. Getting the ball on the head of Fellaini, Pogba or Lukaku at set pieces or on the break can be effective too.

In last season's game, neither team performed and Martial took his chance on the break (although his shot should have been saved). If Spurs perform, you start as strong favourites.

Our record up there doesn’t inspire much confidence for this evening.

Just hope my fears are misplaced.

I just hope we hit the back of the net and make it bulge cos some of the refs we've had up there have been appalling (mendes goal 3 feet over the line and ref says no goal play on lads <doh>)

  14. Strong team providing they all turn up. My worry is Rose - bloody hope he plays with his head and doesn't try and overplay things to make a point. He offers different things to Ben, but he has to remember to defend in a '4'....

COYS!!! You can do this!!! <cheers>

More or less exactly how I thought we'd be lining up.

HITC probably rattling off a story to explain why Sissoko isn't in the squad as we speak...

I have put £20 on Man U to win as I always lose money when betting. That’s my bit for the cause!!

Am really happy with that line up. Very attacking. I thought Poch may go with that except with Sanchez for Moura in a more defensive formation

Strange United line up, looks like they're either going 433 with Pogba as one of the front 3, or it's a diamond midfield with Lingard upfront. Not a lot of width either way.

You never can tell with United as they're usually still very good at frustrating us but I really feel we should be winning this tonight, seeing what they've put out.
