Another recently rediscovered album is The Members 2nd album '1980 The Choice Is Yours' - I have regularly listened to their first album since 1979 and had forgotten just how good the follow up was - heres one that I cant stop playing just now
Off to Southampton tomorrow to see............Yes, it's The Damned again. Paul's back on bass and I couldn't wait until the November gig in Shepherd's Bush. This stuff isn't going to be here forever....more's the pity. This isn't a particular favourite but I'm pretty sure that it's never been posted before. I love the harpsichord and horns but overall it sounds like a madness song from about '81 and the ringing cash register at the end indicates the band's view.......it got them a fat recording contract with MCA. Enjoy............ Don't worry. I'll post some footage from the gig later...........you people are so needy.
Since Twitter has decided he'll be dying in a plane crash over Luton this evening No, really, I'm not making this up: as I type this there's a plane in the sky over Luton that can't land due to the tires on the landing gear blowing out on takeoff, so the pilot is circling in a desperate attempt to burn off fuel so he can make a forced crash landing, and Post Malone is one of the sixteen people on boards - and Twitter's split into three factions: one hoping the plane makes it; one expecting it won't; and those exploiting the story to get their analytics up.
Preferable to Grimly Fiendish, is this beautiful little piece of psychedelic pop from 1982. Written by Paul Gray and with the Captain on guitar, it catches them 3 or 4 years before success hit and when they were infinitely a better band. Just lovely.
Lynryd skynrid guitarist ed king passed away yesterday aged 68 a brilliant guitarist and rock band Sweet home alabama and one of my all time favourite rock anthems Free Bird among many classic songs they made .R.I.P. ed another great musician who will be sorely missed
Harpsichord? WTF? Spector did a load of orchestration with the Ramones 5th album End Of The Century. We didn't need it. Punk rock is guitar, bass, drums. 1,2,3,4
Non. Without psychedelia there's no punk. Without the harpsichord there's no psychedelia. It's grooooooooovy baby!
As promised, some footage from the gig at Southampton. I've gone for some early stuff, Luke likes his punk without frills so here are some balls out versions of Love Song and Born to Kill... Strange crowd. Lots of people dressed for the gig but generally pretty quiet and well behaved. Not a patch on a London audience for rowdiness. Still, we spent the next day in the Sea Museum (Titanic side) and Winchester Cathedral and spent the night of the gig in a pub that served a delicious pint of Aspalls. All very enjoyable. Next stop Shepherds Bush in November. See you there.
I had to sing this at school. It would have been far more fun if we had been done in a Ramonescore style like Boston, MA band The Cretins
Watching Grosse Point Blank again. The Music Director was Joe Strummer. He was asked by John Cusack, who was a great fan.....just reminded me how good The Beat were.....
Someone's just posted this on Youtube...... If you look at Monty (the keyboard player on the far right) there's a tall head at the front of the crowd, wearing a black T shirt, with a massively growing bald patch bobbing around throughout with a beautiful lady with long hair to the right of him. He's a rich, handsome, sophisticated bastard, I'll bet? I wonder who he might be?
Hard to believe that the fabulous album of which this was title track was released 25 years ago today!
My hearing has just about recovered from The Damned gig a couple of weeks ago. Like everything, it just gets worse as you get older. I've been doing a fair number of car journeys with Mrs B recently, which means exposure to The Damned's Phantasmagoria. It's her favourite album as she's a fair few years younger than me and was just at primary school when punk happened. They played this in Southampton as well as Grimly Fiendish, which is unusual as that era's not normally that well reflected in their live stuff (mainly because The Captain didn't play on it). It's a long way from my favourite stuff but it's a nice bit of Gothic pop and Dave sounds great on it, without the fake US accent. Enjoy......
To this idea I have no idea how The Offspring have never been sued for blatant plagiarism. For example, here is their 1998 hit Pretty Fly (for a White Guy) ...which you'll find sounds uncannily similar to Come Out and Play, the 1994 single by another band named Offspring It's hardly the only example of this, either, for example try and listen to their The Offspring's 2005 single Can't Repeat... ...without noticing the obvious similarities to the 1999 single The Kids Aren't Alright, and to make their plagiarism even more obvious the band who released that single are called The Offspring!
