I think that there is a lot resting on HBA staying fit and finding the type of form that he showed briefly for us last season.
You feel that 27 goals in his last 130 odd starts (90+ of those in teh Championship) is a quality return do you? Take off last years hat-trick and two versus Fulham and his return for us is appalling. His finishing is weak, his movement is non-bloody existent and his only true skill is his ability to be caught offside on almost every occasion he does somehow miraculously find himself in space!
He hasnt really had a real run in the team and if he hadnt of played against Fulham we would have lost. If Shola wasnt injured do you think he would have scored?

Anyone else worried that we (the fans, myself included, not just the club) are overdoing the positives of an HBA return? He's not a great goalscorer, hes a magic player but more of the cliche'd scorer of great goals!

Look at it this way, we're not gonna win any of ManU, City, Chelsea, Stoke, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal, Bolton, Villa, most likely we'll lose all those games. So if we lose 1-2 or 0-3...doesn't really matter. We need to score goals against Wigan, West Brom, Swansea, Norwich, QPR, Blackburn, Everton, Fulham (who we usually do well against, otherwise they'd be in the other list). Most importantly we need to put 6 past the mackems at our place. We need strikers who can score against Anton ferdinand and Jonas Olsen not against Terra or Vidic. Ba and Best can propbably do that, if they stay fit. Bar injuries we ought to be okay. But we're not going to be anywhere near the top 7 in the league. Just forget all about that right now.

I think we can all agree on having to hope for the best rather than looking forward being optimistic re our strikers.

The defence looks solid. Kruls done well. We're not going into administration. There are some positives here.

God knows lol. Titus Bramble could have scored the first one mind. The second, well, it looked like a great turn and shot, but after the turn the ball was only at his feet after accidentally hitting another leg (possibly his own). That said, Robbie Fowler forged a great career banging in hundreds, based on miss-hits and fluffs so perhaps there is hoep yet! ;-)
See my next post.....
You've selected to represent his stats in a very basic way and negative way ..
Just use his NUFC stats and come back to us .. not fair to use his Coventry stats as we've no idea how he was used or what type of team they were ... I'm assuming most strikers have a learning curve of some kind ..

Just btw - I do get all of this, I'm not saying we have world beaters up front, but to write them of as sh1t is just unreasonable .. and as the much heralded Kevin Nolan proved other team members can score as well <ok>

Fair enough. NUFC, 16 games in prem, 8 goals....very tasty. Exclude West Ham and Fulham, 13 games in prem, 3 goals.........poor! Your Nolan point is my concern, he is gone, so if teh strikers dont fire (which you have to admit is highly possible) where are the goals coming from?

Cant see why your excluding goals though, a goals a goal. I can see where you are coming from he isnt that great but he does score. I feel Cabaye will be getting a few this season, he has already come close a number of times. Ben Arfa will get some when he is back (probably around 5 this season) and Obertan will crop up with a couple. We also have Collo and Tiote wonder strikes to look forward too.

Imagine this. Tiote up front, he'd just enforce the ball in to the net a couple of times a game. And his defensive attributes wouldn't be wasted as he'd just be winning the ball further up the field, like Barca. Its so simple its genius!

As Jonas pointed out, you're not allowed to just remove goals to prove a point <laugh>
On the Nolan thing .. guess we're going to have to see how Cabaye, Marveaux, Obertan, HBA etc all work out .. hoping one of them can step up <ok>

Can't agree with much of this. No offence to Bolton, but to say we will definitely not beat them,
or Villa, or maybe Stoke is quite frankly stupid. Having a top class striker helps, but just because we haven't got one does not mean we can't win games.

Also, good record against Fulham? We may have beaten them on Sunday, but we got 1 point from them last season and didn't score. We also lost to them in our last home game the year we went down.

What I mean is, we'd win more if he spread his goals around. I know that sounds daft, but scoring a second and third in a game you're already winning is a lot easier (mentally/pressure etc) than scoring a first when its 0-0 or you're 1-0 down, which is when we need the goals. And perhaps i'm thinking his record looks better because of a few 'one offs'

Yeah figured that's where you were coming from .. but I do think Best is gaining confidence, and a couple of really good games helps that for sure, he's got an eye for goal and with the more creative players we now have we may see a surprise gem in the lad where previously we just hoofed it up to Carrol/Shola or relied on Nolan to put away set pieces ..

No, but I feel that 8 goals in 13 premier league games is good enough! Shall we take away all of Shearer's braces and hat-tricks as well whilst we are at it? A goal is a goal and if you take away the brace against Fulham we also lose three points. Just give him a break and get behind the players that are here. Fans like you are pathetic!

And deluded fools like you are why the club knows it can get away with stringing any crappy yarn it likes safe in the knowledge people will still spend in the stores, the turnstiles and food outlets. Take away Shearers braces and hatricks and he still has a great record, not that any of us expect us to be in the market for that level of quality. My point is that we need someone to score in more games, not simply more goals.

The Shearer thing was getting at the fact you can't take away someone's goals. And yes I am pissed off we didn't sign a striker but I am not going to stop going to games and buying the merchandise. What difference would it make if I did stop? My argument is that people like you just won't give Best a chance. Due to the situation we have ended up being in we need to support players like Best, especially when you look at his Premiership record. In terms of scoring in more games, lets give him a chance to play in more games so he can prove you and other idiotic fans wrong.

I wish people would realise that a tap-in is still a goal and you have to be in the right place at the right time to score them <doh>

Also, why was Best **** in the Championship but decent in the Prem?
