I'm ****in sick of hearing about this £35 million,we do NOT make big signings any more deal with it.

People on here were over the moon when we signed Ba now he's suddenly not good enough because we have paid a daft amount like liverpool for another striker.

Yes I expected another one in but for what ever reason didn't happen.

Stop moping and looking for as many negatives as possible.

We've let go 4 first team players (Nolan, Barton, Jose, Routledge) and replaced them with 5 players!!!

Who IMO are more skillfull than those who left (Jose being the exception), we have the tightest defence in the league so far and a very strong midfield which can be swapped around.

We've got Ba and Best up front, Best scored 3 goals in the last 2 (s****horpe incorrectly disallowed)
Doubt we'll do anything spectacular but don't think we'll be anywhere near the relegation zone.

    Another plus, nobody else left!!!

Can someome please explain to me why we waited until the last day to put a bid of 11m in for a striker??? we could have got a QUALITY striker long before yesterday. We have the worst strikeforce in the league, utter sh1te. The fact that ruiz had already met personal terms and done his medical makes me think that ashley new this bid would never come off and was a smokescreen so pardew can tell the fans he tried. Im still lookin forward to the rest of season and pray Ba comes good.

It's all very good saying that we've got a better squad this year, but goals win games, not squads. After we sold Carroll, we lost a player who'd scored 10 goals already in the season. Nolan also only scored 2 goals after losing Carroll. We then even sold him. Thats 20 goals a season we've lost, and we won't replace. As soon as one of our strikers picks up and injury, we're in deep trouble. We'll also be far too easy to play against. Apart from Lovenkrands (who is easy to play against anyway) all we have up front is 3 big, tall, strong guys. If the opponents can handle that, we have nobody else to change the game, no player with pace to burn, trickery, and a proven goalscoring record. THAT is the problem.

Dig, dig, dig people, head needing buried............................

Only one thing HAD to happen this window. We needed to sign a replacement striker who was good enough to get the goals required in the PL. This is because we currently do not have one. We have failed to do this. The manager said it, the fans said, even the board admitted it. Massive fail on their part and Alan Pardew better have been a plasterer in a former life because he has some serious cracks to cover over. They've made him look foolish as he has continually said its required and assured all that they'd get the two required "over the line".

You can dismiss the Ruiz late bid out of hand too for me. This was the typical stunt we've seen by these guys (N'zogbia etc). It always breaks down over fees, wages or he has already signed for someone else. These should not be held up as an example of our ambition, its just naive.

Superb post, agree with everything. I'm very happy with the signings who have come in. I'm disappointed that we don't have another striker but without all the facts I'm not about to make another judgement.

However those saying we left it until late to search for one - you don't actually know that. We don't know what goes on behind closed doors, for example, who knew we were talking to Santon until hours before he signed? Sounds like there were some players (Macheda, Maiga?) who we were in potential discussions with for quite a few weeks but it didn't happen for whatever reason, so in the last 3/4 days we have turned our attentions to others (Cisse 3 days ago, Ruiz yesterday).

The fact the club made offers of £10-13m for these players show they will spend some money, they just won't go overboard and frankly, I'm going to take a long term view and not whinge about that, as we've tried the high spending in the past and it didn't work. We have to accept that we are not, and shall not be for some time, a top 4/5 club so we're not going to attract that sort of player. We can't spend £25m+ on a striker because we won't see instant returns to cover the cost, we have to be patient and make slower steps forward.

And I'm a bit sick of hearing about £35m from the Carroll sale - you do realise that money hasn't been put a special seperate piggy bank to everything else, reserved for transfers don't you? It doesn't work like that, it's swallowed up along with everything else coming in/going out. We've spent something like £19m on players, then there's agents fees, money on renewed contracts (Tiote?), improvements to the ground etc.

We were so optimistic only a few days ago - we couldn't have asked for a better start to the season despite some bogie matches, sure it's disappointing not to get a striker but we have much to look forward to. I'd rather see us maintain a stable balance sheet and gradually improve the squad to challenge for europe in 4/5 years than shell out a fortune on overrated players now who then demand massive wages and cause difficulties with the team through that.

Key phrase was "proven goalscoring record"... While we're all excited to see what Ben Arfa can do, if he can actually stay fit for consecutive games, we NEED a proper out and out striker, who isn't a target man type player.

I posted this on a thread 11 days ago:

"Each transfer window we get the exact same thing:

    1. (start-mid transfer window) The manager notes in numerous interviews that the squad needs investment in obvious areas.
    2. (mid transfer window) Newspapers get us all excited by linking us to ridiculously good foreign players, if we're honest, none of us have ever heard of, or know little beyond a hastily looked-up youtube video.
    3. (mid-late) The manager repeats the phrase that "we are working hard on getting deals done before the window".
    4. (very late) One of the best players in our squad, one of the ones we would build a good team around, leaves (usually for Liverpool).
    5. (Deadline day) We sign someone useless on loan...
    6. (Post dealine day) Manager makes clear that "we were close to making some additions" and that we'll be using funds next window.

Now, if you take Jose to be step 4 (and I hope beyond hope Enrique is the step 4), then our checklist is almost complete guys.
So frustrating to see the building-blocks for a league winning team (and I honestly think Andy, Jose, Cheik, Ben Arfa etc would be such blocks) ignored and passed off to "bigger clubs" year after year.

Let me ask you this, what is the point of following the "Arsenal model" when it's clear that you take out about two players and Arsenal are going rapidly backwards? Is that really what Ashley wants?

Oh well, Wayne Bridge here we come!"

As far as I can see, I was pretty much correct. Except Arsenal, the only followers of the "Arsenal philosphy" in this country, were exposed for the tight-arses they have been for the last few years and have been forced to buy a good few to bulk up on quality. Now, in fairness, we have bulked up our midfield a bit, thank goodness. It was a necessity, but Ba(so not sorry for the pun) Cabaye, they've not looked like world beaters have they, this new midfield? Cheap players to give the illusion of investment. Pathetic.

At least we didn't get Wayne Bridge on loan, but instead we must persist with a changing strike-force of lower-table class, perhaps with the exception of Best, who I see as the only forward at the club capable of reaching goal-scoring double figures this year.

I doubt we'll be seeing any 4-4's, 5-0's, 5-1's or 6-0's this season, unless they are being scored in our end perhaps... But I expect to see more grafting, disjointed, awful to watch bore-fests, like we've seen in the first few games.

In the end, with my expectations as outlined 11 days ago, I suppose I should be content we at least got Santon... Though I always thought I'd seen him playing right-back...

We have done well and have a good squad with one exception. That exception is exceedingly important. We don't have a high quality striker.

The reason we don't have a high quality striker is that the club is unwilling to pay for one.

I am not one who cares particularly whether we spend £35 million or any oter specific amount. I do care that we are unwilling to spend money we have to correct avery serious deficiency in our team.
