Good thread this. Seems to me the "City of Culture" was nurtured by a "City of pub crawling piss-heads". History of Hull needs rewriting.
They'd be off your course, they we're Orchard Park pubs. You certainly didn't miss anything good. Still, there are some fond memories.
Oh, Rampant Horse. Used to collect insurance on Orchard Park. For a while collected from Arctic Ranger. The appearance of someone with a suit on caused consternation. Everyone thought it must be a plain clothes copper or someone from the social security.
It was where I started out. Ilived right near Artic, it was my local. Me and me Sister used to go and goodies from the off sales at Ramp of an evening. You wouldn't let your kids out round there these days.
This was back in the 1970s. Didn't notice any spliffs back then. Arctic Ranger seemed upmarket after Rampant Horse.
My mate off Orchard Park used to go in Haworth for the joints rather than the beer. He hated smoking, wouldn't let anyone smoke in his car but offer him a joint and he would soon be sparking up. Takes all sorts.
Artic was eventually closed for having immigrant slave girls upstairs for the use of the local pervs. They thought they were going to be dancing girls allegedly.
Yes, remember reading about that. Used to go in Wheelhouse after finishing collecting on OPE. Another place which shut down. Surprised me as it always used to be busy with meals at a time most pubs only offered crisps and the odd curled up sandwiches.
Only went in as landlord was a customer. He couldn't understand why they put a loading on his policy. Seems that when he went for a medical as it was for a large amount the doctor asked him he drank much. He said a bottle a day. Stout, bitter asked the doctor? No, Glenfiddich he replied.
Just looking on Google Earth and the raised walkway goes from Stoneferry pretty much at the Chamberlain Road roundabout and comes out on the river bank then you go along the bank to Clough Road. So the other side of the river to Bankside, but similarly industrial
Oohhhh Wheelhouse. That was a Steakhouse and a place of dreams. The old man took me in once, I think he'd had a big win on the horses. Prawn Cocktail in a wine glass!!! A steak the size of the plate!! Bloody hated Black Forest gateau though, that isn't a chocolate cake ffs. Never to be forgotten.
Same as you and Lambo, we used to go to Spiders earlier 80's, different mid-80's crowd in the book so hardly recognised the faces, would like to see earlier photos, does old Dill still work the door?
