"We have to go into the market" - Lee Johnson says Bristol City to look at loans
Robins head coach reacts to home loss to Middlesbrough.

Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson was adamant following the first defeat for the Robins in the Championship this season that he needs to loan in a player.

City were beaten by a Martin Braithwaite prod in and a back post header from Britt Assombalonga although Josh Brownhill and Eros Pisano also both hit the woodwork.

And after the match Johnson explained that he had "no qualms" about the defeat, and insisted that Bristol City now need to reinforce.

The former Barnsley boss says he prefers a loan that would lead to a permanent move if possible, with several targets in mind.

Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson looks on

"I think we need to go into the market - I really do," explained the head coach following the Robins' first home league defeat of the season.

"I keep getting told that Bailey Wright is three, four or five days away but he's not had a pre-season. He's not kicked a ball in pre-season so it's easy to talk about the name.

"Nathan Baker has had a few injuries in the past and now has to have an injection in his ankle.

"Taylor Moore, a young lad, is just coming back and that's what I'm saying. A Lee Johnson team needs to be strong from the back.

"Because we have a lot of players who feed off the second balls at the back. We have to have that dominance," he said.

Asked if he had the scope to do that and would be backed, Johnson was positive that he would get the support he needs.

"Yeah, I'm sure we do. Steve Lansdown has always been dead supportive but it's never easy to get those players. I always prefer a loan with a view to a permanent where possible because it means that someone is committing to the area.

"But listen, if we have to make it short term and patch it up then we'll do that and deal with that," explained the Bristol City head coach.

Meanwhile, Johnson reflected on a first home league defeat of the season as Middlesbrough maintained their early grip on top spot in the Championship.

"It wasn't about the possession today. The two previous games we should have won but I've got no qualms about the game today," he said.

"Basically the first goal was a joke. I don't know if you've had a chance to look back at it but I've never seen a goal so soft in my life.

"We're clearly patched up at the moment. We've got a right-back playing left-back and Lloyd Kelly - I thought he was excellent today - playing centre half and we've also four centre-halfs injured still.

"I go back to last year when we were at our strongest when our defenders - Joe Bryan, Bailey Wright, Aden Flint and Nathan Baker - were at the top of their game.

"And that wall gives the platform. But today we didn't have that. And then whatever happens elsewhere on the pitch it doesn't matter," he said.

Bristol City are straight back into action on Tuesday night against QPR at 7.45pm.

Thank goodness, I for one am glad the man has had a change of thought, after days of saying that no more transfers are needed, now let's hope for some swift action and get a striker in, or is he going to dither and get a defender, that's our problem along with being told there is no finance.

    Tammy is available.

he was basically talking about a defender ….Baily wright, left out of the Aussie squad MAY POSSIBLY HAVE A DETRIMENTAL EFFECT? and a couple with more than their share of "time outs".....
We need a new Flint, although during his ban last season we coped …………
DID WELL to get the money we did for Reid, not had a lot of game time ……. had a few minutes again yesterday!

I’d love to see Tammy return - but the most urgent area to strengthen is the defence.
I’ve absolutely no idea who is available on loan in that position.

Tammy will most probably be going to Villa. I doubt Chelsea will want him in another relegation battle. Whether or not we don’t think we will be in one but to Chelsea looking at us at the moment that’s what we look likely to be heading.

It all adds up to poor preparation for the new season.
We've been crying out for another keeper for several years yet with 2 days to go before the opener against Forest and due to the injury to Fielding we had no one.

Hang on just a cotton picking moment here, isn't it the job of Lee and his cohorts to always look to strengthen the squad and basically are now telling me that they haven't exactly succeeded in that remit? I take you back to previous seasons where the cries from the seats asked the club to invest in certain types of players and in most cases the screams fell on deaf ears back in the boardroom and despite many occasions to improve the competitiveness of the squad we appear to constantly look the other way. I have just had it with all these promises that will always end up on the cutting room floor and perhaps I need to look elsewhere for excitement.

Apart from that Mrs Lincoln how was the show?

If we get more,to add to the 40 signings so far, how confident are fans that new additions won't also be crocks.
Seems Ashton and LJ can only attract players who have dodgy fitness issues and other clubs want rid.
Can only hope that LJ gets better signing CH's cause Bailey Wright certainly isn't a Championship CH and Webster yesterday, granted highlights, but looks ........
Anyone think another LJ signing, Hegeler, might be up to it or is he not fit either.

Should be ok on Tuesday but - it's coming home.

But can you see it more clearly from your side of the pond Tom? From my limited vision through the smoke filled skies all I see is the usual confusion of what we want to be and how to get there without breaking the bank. Will we ever come close to getting it right?

This is what we see from this side of the pond and Severn Bridge Mike, our recent playing history looking like the name of a Welsh town.

Not a Welsh town but Bristol City’s last 28 results, stretching back to December 2017. 4 wins in 28. 22 points from a possible 72. That averages as less than 44 points across a season. Relegation form and it doesn’t look like improving.

    Bleak.

Isn't that fairly normal, why Clubs loan out their players RP? Apart from the odd few players they are trying to get experience for........which every club outside the top 6 clubs from the prem, are also after..

1For - Not exactly sure what you mean.
I'm not referring to players we loan who are trying to gain experience.

I'm saying LJ has seemed to sign, not loan, players who come here with an injury problem.
Hegeler, O'Neil, Adelakun, Bailey Wright, Djuric, Pisano, O'Dowda etc
Fammy and Paterson have also been on the sidelines for long periods.
And I've probably forgotten 1 or 2 others.

Some fans think it bad luck, I don't.
    It's happened far to often.

Tbf, I must be getting old, Mark Ashton needs to be questioned, isn't he equally culpable ?
Just watch, he'll be off to that EFL Board job citing he can't 'focus' on 2 jobs.
